Chapter 75

Olivia Lightfoot finally gave in to her loyalty and obediently fetched a glass of warm water, gently patting Evelyn Carter's back. "Dr. Carter, slow down. The blood draw isn't until tomorrow."

Evelyn's face flushed red from coughing as she waved her hand. "Too spicy..."

"Have some soup." Gregory Wilson appeared beside her without warning, placing an elegant thermal container on the table. "Cordyceps and goji berry chicken soup. Good for replenishing energy."

"From the cafeteria?" Evelyn looked surprised.

The hospital cafeteria usually served simple fare—lucky to even get seaweed egg drop soup.

"Made it this morning," Gregory said casually. "I have a meeting with the director. I'll pick it up later."

With that, he turned and walked away, his steps steady.

Evelyn sat frozen, chopsticks still hovering mid-air.

Olivia immediately scooted closer, eyes gleaming. "Dr. Carter—"

"Speak normally." Evelyn frowned. "You're giving me goosebumps."

Olivia tapped the thermal container meaningfully. "Do you think Dr. Wilson came here just for you?"

Evelyn lowered her head and shoveled rice into her mouth. "Don't speculate. He said it's because his family is in H City."

Olivia propped her chin on her hand. "Homemade soup? That's some serious effort."

"Maybe it was for himself."

"Then he's being awfully generous."

Evelyn didn't respond, focusing on her meal.

Olivia reached for the container. "Let me see how good his cooking is—"

"Don't." Evelyn swatted her hand away. "It needs to be returned exactly as is."

"That's harsh." Olivia pouted.

Evelyn set down her chopsticks, her voice soft. "If there's no possibility, don't give false hope. Stringing someone along isn't right."

Olivia lowered her voice. "You're divorced now. You could start as friends and see where it goes..."

Evelyn coughed violently.

"Today's food isn't spicy." Olivia quickly handed her a tissue. "Are you okay, Dr. Carter? Allergic reaction?"

Evelyn wiped her mouth. "I'm allergic to the word 'friends.'"

"Huh?" Olivia looked baffled.

Evelyn had already packed her lunchbox and pushed Gregory's container toward her. "Leave this at the reception desk for Dr. Wilson to pick up."

"What about you?"

"Blood draw tomorrow." Evelyn stood. "I need to prepare."

Olivia hugged the container and nodded. "Leave it to me."

At the door, Evelyn suddenly turned back. "Do you still have those cookies Dr. Wilson gave you?"

Olivia immediately shielded the bag. "You're not giving these back too, are you?"

"Hand them over." Evelyn extended her palm.
