Chapter 708
"Police uniforms? Forging law enforcement attire is a felony!"
"Criminals posing as officers pose an even greater threat."
"Take me to the scene immediately!"
The real officers followed Evelyn Carter toward the pharmacy.
The two imposters panicked when they lost their target. By the time they tried to flee, it was too late.
After briefing the police, Evelyn hailed a cab back to the Hamilton estate. En route, she dialed Margaret Hamilton.
Alexander Hamilton's disappearance coinciding with the fake cops' appearance was too suspicious to ignore.
The call connected on the first ring.
"Evelyn! Are you alright? Lily and Lotus told me your mother and the baby arrived safely. We've been frantic—neither you nor Alexander would answer..."
Margaret's voice trembled with urgency.
"My apologies, Margaret. I had to silence my phone during the emergency." Evelyn kept her tone steady. "The imposters have been apprehended."
A sharp inhale came through the line.
"They were really fake? Evelyn, come home at once. It's too dangerous out there. Where could that boy have gone..."
Margaret's words shook with distress.
After confirming her family's safety, Evelyn soothed, "Alexander is handling critical business. He'll contact you when finished."
She couldn't reveal he'd vanished with Lydia Laurent.
"Impersonating officers is a serious crime. I'll return after wrapping things up." Evelyn deflected.
"You young people shouldn't keep such late hours..." Margaret fretted, glancing at the clock.
Evelyn maintained composure, betraying no alarm. Hanging up, she told the driver, "Change of destination—Hamilton Tower."
The cabbie chuckled. "Working this late?"
"...Yes." The response was absentminded.
Her mind raced through Alexander's possible locations. The corporate headquarters was the most promising lead.
Hamilton Tower blazed with light.
Natalie Stapleton was managing sudden chaos. Employees from Operations, the Board, and Finance—all with Laurent Group ties—were causing disruptions.
The seasoned executive immediately had the secretarial team secure the CEO's office, herding protesters into a conference room.
Evelyn spotted the anomaly instantly. Calmly informing reception, "I'm retrieving a forgotten item. Is Natalie available?"
The front desk understood, notifying Natalie immediately.
In the elevator, they exchanged rapid updates.
"If something happened, Alexander would've reached out. But both he and Lydia are offline." Natalie sounded exhausted. "Banyan Group is in complete disarray."
"Emily Zade won't return until tomorrow. With no leadership..."
Evelyn cut to the chase. "Give it to me straight."
Natalie delivered the report: "Tonight was the scheduled payment to the Laurents. Despite Alexander terminating the deal, the project lead insists on processing it."
"Alexander gave direct orders. How can he defy them?"
"Personal interests in the venture." Natalie lowered her voice. "Stranger still, other departments suddenly claim the agreement remains valid."
Evelyn's brow furrowed. "They're exploiting loopholes. Why would Hamilton employees advocate for the Laurents? Unless..."
Their eyes met, both arriving at the same conclusion: Someone inside was collaborating, knowing Alexander couldn't intervene.
