Chapter 682

The lion cat rubbed against Evelyn's ankle, emitting soft mews. She crouched down, fingertips gently stroking its snow-white fur.

"They say pet owners attract animals easily. Seems true."

A sudden memory of her Ragdoll at home brought a pang of sorrow. When she'd adopted it, she never imagined so much would change.

"White Coat must be doing well with Dr. Wilson taking care of it." She paused. "That little kitten..."

Alexander immediately responded, "I brought it back from the pet shop. Mom's keeping it now. Aunt Margaret adores it—says it's like having a child around."

Evelyn exhaled in relief, fingers absently twirling the lion cat's tail.

"You never named it?" She arched a brow at Alexander.

He shrugged. "Waited for you. You have a talent for creative names."

The memory of "White Coat" made her chuckle. "Sure about that? What if I pick something like 'Rover'?"

"Your call." His gaze softened. "Not my name anyway."

The lion cat circled their feet before darting toward the fortune-telling area. They followed to the temple hall where an elderly man arranged bamboo sticks.

"Sincerity brings divine response." The elder offered the cylinder. "Focus on your wish, shake it, then match the stick to the verses on the wall."

Kneeling on the cushion, Evelyn closed her eyes. She prayed for her parents, for the child she'd never held. A soft clatter—the 87th stick fell.

"Supreme luck!" The elder unrolled the parchment. "A dragon gains water, blessings everlasting."

Alexander's lips curved as he watched her carefully fold the prophecy into her pocket. When his turn came, Evelyn filled his thoughts. The cylinder rattled—the 22nd stick dropped.

"Moderate fortune." The elder stroked his beard. "Rain after drought—success lies in effort."

"I sought love's fortune," Alexander stated plainly.

The elder's knowing glance flicked to Evelyn. "Modern times—men pursuing women is normal. This verse means seizing opportunities."

Evelyn pretended not to hear, petting the returned lion cat. Only outside did she speak: "You asked about love?"

"Yes." Alexander produced their wedding ring. "Though you've refused me countless times, I wanted the gods' opinion."

Sunset stretched their shadows long. The lion cat perched on stone steps, tilting its head at them.
