Chapter 674
Evelyn crouched down, her fingertips lightly touching Alexander's right leg.
"Bone's intact. Just a sprain." She withdrew her hand. "But orthopedics isn't my specialty."
Emily hesitated. "Madam, should we handle it here?"
Alexander rolled up his pant leg without hesitation, revealing a swollen, bruised ankle. "This is nothing."
Evelyn frowned. "It'll hurt."
"I've endured worse." A faint smile tugged at his lips.
Emily signaled the accompanying physician to step forward.
The middle-aged doctor glanced at Evelyn in surprise. "Madam Hamilton is a doctor too?"
"OB-GYN." Her reply was clipped.
"With clinical experience, you should be able to treat a sprain, right?"
Evelyn pressed her lips together.
She could. But years in obstetrics had weakened her strength. And Alexander's legs were so long...
Alexander smoothly intervened. "We appreciate your expertise, Doctor."
Emily quickly handed over the medical kit. "Thank you for your help."
The doctor skillfully realigned the bone, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "No wonder Madam Hamilton declined. This work is physically demanding for female physicians."
Emily promptly led the doctor away.
Alexander sat on a rock, his pant leg rolled to the knee, exposing scar-riddled calves and forearms.
"I can go to the town hospital—"
"These wounds need immediate attention." Evelyn had already opened the medical kit, retrieving disinfectants.
Her movements were gentle as she cleared debris from the injuries, irrigating them with saline.
"Does it hurt?"
Alexander's Adam's apple bobbed. "Tolerable."
"I need to apply more pressure for thorough disinfection."
"Understood."
After treating his legs, Evelyn's gaze lingered on the old scars along his forearm—remnants of a fire.
Now fresh wounds marred the same skin.
All because of her.
"Rest if you're tired," Alexander murmured.
"Stay still."
She continued working.
A police officer approached to inquire about the previous night's events.
Alexander summarized succinctly: "They mistook me for a lawyer hired by the villagers. Wanted to make an example of me. I escaped by jumping into the pond."
"Did you collapse the lotus plants?"
"We did."
Once the officer left, Evelyn and Emily exchanged glances.
"What else happened?" Alexander instantly sensed the tension.
Emily took a deep breath. "While searching for you...the police found a body in the pond."
Alexander's pupils constricted. "The Laurents dared to kill?"
"Estimated time of death was two to three months ago," Evelyn added. "The critical point is—they operated under Hamilton Group's name."
Alexander's expression darkened.
"The entire village believes Hamilton Group committed murder," Emily said tightly.
"Identify the deceased first." Alexander's voice was grave. "A life is at stake."
Emily nodded. "The freezer's been delivered to the clinic. The支教teacher matter requires more time. As for the company—"
"Keep close watch on Laurent Enterprises." Alexander's instruction was brief.
After seeing Emily's team off, Elder Thompson arrived with Lily and Lotus Waters in tow.
"Mr. Hamilton!" The village elder wiped his tears. "You've no idea how frantic Dr. Carter was—didn't sleep a wink all night..."
