Chapter 670
Even Alexander Hamilton, the legendary figure of Hudson High School No.5, couldn't hold his ground against overwhelming numbers.
Backed by Leonard Laurent's influence, the thugs had no qualms about assaulting even college students. This time, they vowed to make an example out of him...
Evelyn Carter's grip on her phone tightened, her palm slick with cold sweat.
Despite their past conflicts, Alexander had saved them by the pond. She couldn't just stand by and watch him get hurt.
That long-forgotten number in her contacts was now her only hope.
The call connected almost instantly.
"Evelyn~" Lydia Laurent's saccharine voice dripped through the receiver. "What brings you to call so late?"
Evelyn tore through the facade. "You know about your father using the Hamilton Group's name to get away with murder, don't you?"
"Oh, Evelyn, how could you accuse my father like—"
"Enough." Evelyn's laugh was icy. "That look you gave me on the street last time showed your true colors. Who are you pretending for now?"
Silence stretched for several seconds.
Lydia's voice dropped, venom seeping through. "Why were you there? Did you bring the police? Or was Alexander with you?"
Evelyn gave her no time to think. "Your father's men are surrounding Alexander right now. I've already called the police. If you don't want him behind bars, call them off. Now."
She hung up without waiting for a response.
Less than a minute later, Lydia called back.
"Evelyn!" The mask was gone, her voice laced with malice. "You think the police can stop this?"
"We'll see." Evelyn's tone was glacial. "Remember—if anything happens to Alexander, your father will be the first one in handcuffs."
She disconnected again.
At dawn, Lotus Waters came sprinting into the clinic, breathless.
"Dr. Carter!" His face was flushed. "The police and backup are here!"
Evelyn shot to her feet. "Where's Alexander?"
The boy avoided her gaze. "H-he hasn't been found yet..."
"Tell me the truth!" She seized his shoulders.
"The lilies by the pond..." His voice trembled. "They're all flattened. The police are... dredging the water."
Dredging?
The world spun. Evelyn staggered toward the door.
"No!" Lotus threw himself in her path. "Big Brother made me promise to protect you! It's too dangerous!"
"Move!" Her voice was raw.
She had to see for herself.
Even if... it was the worst possible outcome.
