Chapter 667
Evelyn reached into Alexander's coat pocket, her fingertips brushing against the cold metal casing of his phone.
"Dead battery," she sighed.
Alexander gave a wry smile. "All the chargers are in the car."
Lotus nervously twisted the hem of his shirt. "Dr. Carter, those men were really scary. They said they worked for Hamilton Group and had powerful connections in the city."
"Hamilton Group?" Evelyn's brow furrowed slightly.
Lotus nodded vigorously. "I found one of their business cards—it said Hamilton Group, Hudson City. My sister said they just want to drive us out and take our land."
Alexander's expression darkened instantly.
"Impossible," he stated firmly. "Hamilton Group has no projects in this area."
Evelyn looked thoughtful. "Could someone be impersonating your company?"
"We'll have to investigate," Alexander lowered his voice. "But Hamilton Group would never do something like this."
Lotus suddenly stopped walking. "How can you be so sure, mister?"
Alexander cleared his throat. "I have friends who work there."
The boy's face fell.
"Those men said..." He bit his lip. "Their boss is the father-in-law of Hamilton's big boss—even more powerful than Mr. Hamilton himself."
The air turned icy.
Evelyn and Alexander exchanged a glance, both seeing the answer in each other's eyes.
Leonard Laurent.
Alexander narrowed his eyes. "Their boss's last name is Laurent?"
"Yes!" Lotus exclaimed. "They always called him Mr. Laurent on the phone."
Alexander crouched down. "What exactly have they done?"
The boy's gaze dimmed. "It's no use... They've destroyed so many homes in our village. Big Brother said he'd sue them, but then..."
Evelyn's chest tightened. "What happened?"
"Big Brother disappeared." Lotus's voice trembled. "When the police found him... he couldn't speak anymore. His legs were broken too."
The night wind rustled through fallen leaves.
Alexander's knuckles turned white.
"Animals," he spat through clenched teeth.
Evelyn gently touched his arm. "Let's get to the village first."
Suddenly, Lotus grabbed Alexander's sleeve. "Mister... do you know Mr. Hamilton?"
A brief silence.
"I do," Alexander said softly. "I'm Alexander Hamilton."
The boy's eyes widened as he took two steps back.
"Don't be afraid," Evelyn quickly knelt beside him. "Alexander is here to help you."
Tears welled up in Lotus's eyes. "Really?"
Alexander nodded solemnly.
"I swear on my name as CEO of Hamilton Group—those people will pay for what they've done."
Distant barking echoed through the night.
Lotus wiped his eyes. "We should hurry. It's getting dark."
The three quickened their pace.
Evelyn kept her voice low. "Leonard is trying to drag you into this mess."
Alexander's laugh was cold. "He's digging his own grave."
"That missing college student—"
"I'll investigate thoroughly." Alexander's gaze turned stormy. "No one gets away with this."
The village lights grew closer.
Lotus stopped abruptly. "Dr. Carter... Mr. Hamilton... you'll really help us?"
Alexander ruffled the boy's hair.
"Not just help." His voice was steel. "I'll make them crawl here to apologize."
In the darkness, his eyes gleamed like honed blades.
