Chapter 642
Evelyn Carter stood at the entrance of the rural clinic, watching from a distance as a familiar figure was surrounded by a group of children. His expensive suit was covered in tiny handprints, and his usually immaculate hair was slightly disheveled.
Alexander Hamilton seemed to sense something and suddenly turned around.
Their eyes met. A flicker of panic flashed in his gaze before it melted into a relieved smile.
"Mm."
Elder Thompson hurried forward, eyeing the distinguished young man. "Shoo, shoo, don't block the way."
The children scattered like startled birds.
"I'm the village elder. May I ask who you are—"
"Hello." Alexander was impeccably polite. "I'm here on behalf of Hudson Central Hospital to deliver medical supplies to the clinic."
His gaze drifted past the crowd, landing squarely on Evelyn. The emotions in his eyes were too complex to name. Only when he confirmed she was unharmed did the tension in his shoulders ease slightly.
Evelyn had tanned a little, but her spirit was bright.
Following his line of sight, Elder Thompson suddenly understood. "Ah, you're here for Dr. Carter."
The villagers exchanged knowing, warm smiles.
Alexander didn't deny it. Instead, he explained gently, "I've brought some common medications. Feel free to contact us if you need more."
Elder Thompson rubbed his hands together excitedly. "Thank you so much! Did Dr. Carter arrange this?"
The trunk opened, revealing crates upon crates of medical supplies. The villagers gasped.
"The car can't go any further. Do you have a cart?"
"Yes, yes!" Elder Thompson immediately called for someone to fetch one.
Alexander removed his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves, ready to help.
"Oh no, no!" The elder stopped him. "May I ask your surname?"
"Hamilton."
"Mr. Hamilton, people like you are rare!" Elder Thompson's eyes grew misty. "The last bunch just came for photos and never showed their faces again..."
Alexander looked slightly uncomfortable with the praise, his eyes unconsciously searching for Evelyn.
She was busy organizing the supplies, pretending not to notice his silent plea for rescue.
The children swarmed back.
Alexander returned to the car and retrieved an elegantly wrapped box of chocolates.
"A small gift." He crouched down, handing a piece to each child.
"Thank you, uncle!"
"Call him big brother!" Elder Thompson corrected.
Alexander watched with a smile as the children ran off gleefully, slipping the last piece of chocolate into his pocket.
Evelyn had just finished sorting the supplies when she looked up to see him approaching.
"Thank you for the donation," she said professionally.
Instead of responding, Alexander pulled out the chocolate. "Saved this for you."
The wrapper bore unfamiliar Italian script.
Evelyn was genuinely hungry and unwrapped it without hesitation.
"Seems like you're doing well," he murmured.
"Yes. Very fulfilling."
"I know you wanted space," Alexander said quietly, studying her. "But I couldn't stop worrying. Neither could the elders at home."
Evelyn nibbled the chocolate and gave a small nod.
Elder Thompson enthusiastically invited, "Mr. Hamilton, why not rest at my place?"
"No need." Alexander's gaze returned to Evelyn. "I'll go with Dr. Carter. We have... things to discuss."
