Chapter 598

Evelyn's fingers paused on the wardrobe handle. She frowned slightly. "Professional attire better represents the company image. Wouldn't a skirt suit and trench coat be too casual for work?"

She stopped abruptly.

What did those whispers matter anyway?

During her hospital days, she'd learned one truth—gossip couldn't touch her.

Alexander finished clearing the dining table and leaned against the doorframe. "I often wear casual clothes to the office. No one dares comment. Not because my taste is impeccable—"

His gaze landed on the high heels by the entrance. "Competence matters more than heel height. Besides, watching you walk in those looks painful."

Evelyn instinctively rubbed her ankle.

Those shoes had indeed caused her misery.

"Easy for you to say," she scoffed. "No one would dare object if Chairman Hamilton showed up to meetings in slippers."

"Why not see the outfit I prepared first?" Alexander raised an eyebrow. "I bet you haven't even unwrapped it."

Evelyn turned back to her room, hurriedly organizing her briefcase.

USB drive, documents, notebook... She double-checked each item. As a newly appointed executive, she couldn't afford any missteps.

Her fingers brushed against an exquisite paper bag tucked deep in the wardrobe. She froze.

Alexander had personally selected this professional ensemble for her.

The sound of running water came from the kitchen.

Alexander efficiently washed the dishes. As he dried his hands, Evelyn emerged.

He stood by the entrance, studying her for a moment. "It suits you."

The tailored blazer paired with a turtleneck balanced professionalism with effortless poise.

Evelyn bent to tie her shoelaces. "I didn't realize Chairman Hamilton had such expertise in women's fashion."

"Observation isn't difficult," he took her briefcase, "when one pays attention."

"I should go." Evelyn checked her watch.

Alexander was prepared. "Emily is vetting drivers. Until then, I'll handle transportation." Seeing her frown, he added, "And check on Anderson Group's operations for your father."

An irrefutable excuse.

Evelyn sighed and moved toward the back seat.

Alexander's eyes darkened slightly, but he remained silent.

The car glided smoothly.

He occasionally mentioned financial news. Evelyn responded absently, her gaze fixed outside.

"Pull over at the next intersection," she suddenly said.

Alexander signaled the turn. "Worried about gossip?"

"It's hard enough being a professional woman," Evelyn adjusted her collar, "especially a young female executive. I won't fuel office chatter."

She exited quickly.

Alexander watched her retreating figure, fingers tapping the steering wheel.

No rush.

Patience was his forte.

Walking down the sidewalk, Evelyn silently thanked herself for switching to flats.

Alexander's suggestion had proven unexpectedly practical.

Three people stood as she opened her office door.

"Ms. Carter." Emily smiled and introduced the others. "This is driver Daisy Lee and assistant Ms. Liu. Both personally selected by Chairman Hamilton."

Daisy was youthful and energetic. Ms. Liu exuded steady competence.

Evelyn's gaze lingered on Ms. Liu for an extra beat.

"Call me Lucy," the woman offered warmly. "I didn't expect to be on par with Emily."

"You know each other?" Evelyn gestured for her to sit.

Lucy remained composed. "I worked at Hamilton Group's overseas branch. Officially Alexander's assistant, though we rarely met. Emily handles domestic affairs."

Evelyn pondered this.

Anyone Alexander personally assigned would undoubtedly excel.

More importantly—this "Lucy" seemed intimately familiar with Anderson Group's inner workings.
