Chapter 565

Alexander pressed the accelerator hard, making the car lurch forward.

"Slow down," Evelyn frowned.

He eased off the gas, realizing his lapse. In the rearview mirror, Lydia's figure grew smaller.

"What did you see earlier?" Alexander asked abruptly.

Evelyn's fingers stilled for a second.

"Lydia hasn't left yet," she said flatly. "Why?"

His gaze remained fixed ahead. "There's nothing between us. I only used her to make Annabelle back off. She wouldn't dare cross the Banyan Group's heiress."

"Your personal affairs don't concern me."

Silence filled the car.

Alexander changed the subject. "When are you officially taking over Anderson Group?"

"Sooner the better." She stroked the Ragdoll cat in her lap. "The news won't stay hidden long."

He nodded, then suddenly pulled over.

"Problem?" Evelyn eyed him warily.

He dialed Emily. "Release the announcement. Set it for next Monday."

Hanging up, dappled shadows from the trees played across his profile.

"Monday's the management meeting. All board members will be there," he explained. "Best time for your debut."

Evelyn gave a soft hum.

The cat stretched in her arms, emitting a delicate mewl.

"Nervous?" Alexander asked.

"More so when lecturing interns." She scratched under the cat's chin. "At least I don't need lesson plans this time."

A chuckle escaped him. "Always so composed."

The quiet between them grew palpable, their breaths audible.

Evelyn checked the time. "Drop me at the next intersection. I'll walk home."

"I'll take you," Alexander stated firmly.

In the elevator, she reached out. "Give me the bags."

"I've got them," he insisted.

Standing at their respective doors, he suggested, "Rest at my place first? Auntie Wu keeps it spotless."

"No need." She retrieved her keys. "My apartment's fine as is."

He sighed. "Your aunt's still there. I just want you to rest properly."

"I didn't rest well when I had that fever either," she said pointedly.

The click of the turning key echoed sharply down the hallway.
