Chapter 56

Gregory Wilson frowned slightly. "Attorney Jane returned to China mid-case, and it was transferred to another lawyer. As the emergency physician, I only issued the death certificate before leaving. The case was still pending when I departed."

Vivian Dempsey scoffed. "Foreign bureaucracy never changes—always dragging their feet."

"But Attorney Jane was quite... memorable."

"Oh?"

Gregory shook his head. "That involves personal privacy. I shouldn’t elaborate."

Vivian smirked in understanding. "Must’ve been something scandalous."

Gregory smiled without confirming.

A waiter approached nervously. "Excuse me—"

Vivian cut him off impatiently. "Out of pineapple fried rice again? Fine, cancel the order."

"No, it’s... two guests claiming to be your friends asked to share your table."

"Friends?"

Vivian shot Gregory a puzzled look, but he seemed equally confused.

"They said they spoke to you earlier at the entrance..." The waiter stepped aside, revealing Evelyn Carter and Alexander Hamilton.

Vivian’s lips curled coldly. "They’re not my friends."

The waiter froze awkwardly.

Evelyn approached, her pregnant belly prominent. "Miss Dempsey, we just met outside."

"Does a glance from a stray dog on the street make it my friend too? Should I feed every creature that looks my way?"

Evelyn stiffened. "I’m pregnant. Must you be so cruel—"

"Who fathered that child isn’t my concern." Vivian turned to the waiter. "Escort them out."

The waiter hesitated, glancing at Alexander.

Alexander’s expression darkened. "Let’s go."

He reached for Evelyn’s arm, but she shook him off.

Evelyn locked eyes with Evelyn. "Dr. Carter, you wouldn’t turn away a pregnant woman, would you? Alexander’s been trying to reach you about the divorce paperwork for days."

"I blocked him." Evelyn’s gaze shifted calmly to Alexander. "Is there an issue with the agreement?"

Alexander gave a bitter smile.

The terms were brutally simple—split assets evenly. She wanted nothing, only a swift exit.

"If there are no objections, set a date. Just sign a power of attorney, and Emily and I can handle the formalities."
