Chapter 519
The waitress retrieved several packages from the bottom shelf of the service cart and placed them gently on the nightstand.
It was Evelyn Carter's usual brand of sanitary pads.
Both day and night versions were provided.
"Mr. Hamilton specifically requested these, saying you might need them soon."
Evelyn's fingers trembled slightly.
She recalled that conversation about sanitary pads with Lydia Laurent in the car.
He remembered such a small detail.
"Miss Carter, is there anything else you need?"
"No, thank you."
"I'll take my leave then. I'll return later to clear the dishes."
Evelyn suddenly called out, "Does the hotel sell lollipops?"
The waitress hesitated. "Would you like me to purchase some for you?"
"No, I was just curious."
Then where had Alexander gotten those lollipops last night...
"Miss Carter, would you like some brown sugar tea? Though Mr. Hamilton didn't mention it—"
"What's today's date?"
"The 18th."
The 18th.
Her cycle had always been regular.
She usually experienced backaches and bloating beforehand.
But this time, three days late with no symptoms.
A terrifying thought flashed through her mind.
Evelyn's face drained of color.
"Miss Carter! I'll fetch Mr. Hamilton immediately—"
"No!" Evelyn grabbed her wrist. "Call me a car. I need to go to the hospital."
"But Mr. Hamilton instructed—"
"Tell him I'm visiting my sister."
The waitress nodded hesitantly and left.
With shaking hands, Evelyn tore open a lollipop and shoved it into her mouth.
The sweetness spread across her tongue.
Her hands trembled so violently that the sweater she'd picked up slipped to the floor.
......
Alexander Hamilton's office.
Mr. Laurent wiped sweat from his temple. "Mr. Hamilton, regarding the engagement..."
"The business partnership continues." Alexander focused on feeding water to the child in his arms. "Only the engagement is canceled."
"But Lydia—"
"Mr. Laurent," Alexander met his gaze, "your daughter is no longer a child."
Mr. Laurent wrung his hands. "I just worry she might fall for the wrong—"
"So you want me to take responsibility?"
"No! It's just that Lydia's so naive—"
"Naive?" Alexander chuckled. "Do you truly know your daughter, Mr. Laurent?"
Mr. Laurent fell silent.
Alexander checked his watch. "The press release goes out simultaneously. Legal is finalizing the partnership details."
"Mr. Hamilton!" Mr. Laurent blurted. "Is there really no chance for Lydia?"
"My heart belongs to someone else."
"Who?"
"Ask your daughter." Alexander stood, cradling the child. "She knows very well."
