Chapter 495

The afternoon sun slanted through the airport terminal in H City.

Evelyn Carter dragged her weary steps behind Alexander Hamilton, watching as he effortlessly retrieved their luggage and pushed the cart forward with practiced ease.

"I can manage," she said, reaching for her suitcase.

Alexander sidestepped her, moving the cart ahead. "Public resources shouldn’t be wasted."

His tall figure stood out in the crowd, forcing Evelyn to quicken her pace to keep up.

Suddenly, he stopped.

Following his gaze, Evelyn saw a little girl with braids sitting atop a suitcase, giggling as her pink princess dress fluttered in the breeze.

"Does she remind you of anyone?" he asked softly.

Evelyn turned her face away. "All children are equally adorable."

Alexander’s Adam’s apple bobbed, his knuckles whitening around the cart handle. "Let’s go."

In the parking lot, Emily Zade had been waiting. Her eyes flickered with understanding as she watched them approach separately.

"Mr. Hamilton, Ms. Carter."

Evelyn nodded politely. "Thank you for your hard work, Emily. The Anderson Group matters have been handled well because of you."

"It’s my job," Emily replied, opening the car door with a smile. "I heard you’ll be taking over the Anderson Group?"

Alexander cut in abruptly. "We’ll talk in the car."

He slid into the backseat, leaving ample space between them—enough for another person.

As the car started, Emily glanced at the awkward pair through the rearview mirror and broke the silence. "If you need an assistant, Ms. Carter, I can recommend some reliable candidates."

"That would be perfect. I’ve been worried about that."

"But for business matters..." Emily’s eyes flicked meaningfully to the mirror. "Mr. Hamilton is the most knowledgeable."

Evelyn’s fingers twisted unconsciously. "Mr. Hamilton is extremely busy—"

"Not at all." Alexander spoke suddenly, still staring out the window, his jaw tight. "Emily, inform the front desk that Ms. Carter is welcome to visit my office anytime."

Evelyn froze.

The air in the car grew thin. She inched closer to her door, only to realize Alexander had already pressed himself against the opposite window.

The invisible chasm between them seemed impossible to bridge.
