Chapter 453
Vivian Dempsey leaned in with a playful grin. "Our Dr. Carter is quite the celebrity in maternity circles. She recently graced the cover of a medical journal."
Sophia Winston's lips curved slightly, a glimmer of understanding flashing in her eyes.
She responded smoothly, "Such remarkable achievements at such a young age. Truly impressive."
Evelyn Carter had never been comfortable with professional flattery.
Fortunately, Vivian was quick on her feet, showering Sophia with equally lavish praise.
Sophia seemed distracted, sipping her champagne absently, not even bothering with a polite smile.
Then Vivian shifted gears. "Dr. Carter has treated numerous infertility cases, with several successful pregnancies."
Sophia's fingers tightened around her glass.
Vivian pressed her advantage. "Ms. Winston, since you're here, why not give it a try? It couldn't hurt."
Sophia's gaze sharpened. "Have you been investigating me?"
"Heavens, no!" Vivian waved her hands dismissively. "Perhaps we should find a quieter spot to talk?"
The three women moved wordlessly to a secluded corner of the ballroom.
Sophia studied Evelyn with a mix of scrutiny and hesitation.
Evelyn met her gaze steadily, waiting.
"Dr. Carter, have we met before?"
"I worked in the OB-GYN department at Central Hospital."
Sophia frowned thoughtfully. "Not at the hospital. You and Alexander Hamilton from Hamilton Group..."
The air turned icy.
"My apologies, that was presumptuous." Sophia gave a light laugh. "Last year at the Cloud Terrace Resort, I saw Mr. Hamilton personally open a car door for you."
Evelyn's fingertips went cold.
That had been her third visit to that hotel.
Sophia's tone turned meaningful. "At the time, I thought we'd soon be celebrating their wedding. Who would've guessed..."
"Alexander Hamilton and I are no longer involved."
"If that's truly the case," Sophia turned to leave, "then Dempsey Group's investment proposal hardly warrants consideration."
Vivian blocked her path in a panic. "Ms. Winston, Dr. Carter's medical skills are exceptional!"
"I've been to every major hospital," Sophia said bitterly. "Even tried folk remedies. Nothing worked."
"But what if there's still hope?"
Sophia's eyes darted between them.
Vivian rushed to assure her, "Regardless of the outcome, we'd never leverage this for investment."
After two agonizing minutes of silence,
Sophia finally spoke. "All my tests show normal results."
"Your husband?"
"He's had full examinations too. All indicators are optimal."
Evelyn frowned. "May I review your test reports?"
"I didn't bring them today. But you should be able to access my medical records at Central Hospital."
