Chapter 395

Teresa's eyes dimmed momentarily before lighting up with understanding. She gave a gentle nod.

"Focus on recovering first. We can discuss other matters later."

She opened her mouth, but only a hoarse whisper escaped.

"I know what you want to ask." Evelyn clasped her hand tightly. "The job opportunity in England is rare, but I need time to consider."

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Alexander stood outside, his gaze meeting Evelyn's through the glass window.

"Come in."

He pushed the door open, holding a folded receipt for the cot. "The bed's been returned."

"Mm."

"Why aren't you sitting?" His eyes dropped to Teresa's hand holding Evelyn's, and he immediately understood. He pulled up a visitor's chair beside Evelyn.

After she sat, Evelyn gestured toward the hallway. "Go get another chair."

"No need."

"You didn't rest well last night either."

The corner of Alexander's lips quirked up. "Who'd dare make you take responsibility?"

Evelyn nearly blurted out Annabelle's name.

But the Annabelle of today was no longer the same person.

"Margaret would be heartbroken."

"She'd rejoice at me working hard for you." Alexander leaned against the wall. "As long as you're not asking for my life."

"What would I do with your life?"

"Then let me keep it." He shrugged. "At least I can still run errands for Aunt Teresa."

Evelyn turned her face away without responding.

"Is Aunt Teresa feeling better?"

"She still can't speak."

Alexander nodded. "This entire ward floor has been cleared. No disturbances."

Teresa reached out gratefully.

Alexander immediately took her hand.

In the next moment, Teresa placed his hand over Evelyn's.

Reacting swiftly, Alexander interlaced his fingers with Evelyn's. "I understand."

Evelyn yanked her hand back and stood abruptly. "I need to call her husband."

That term still stuck in her throat.

"No need." Alexander stopped her. "I've already notified him."
