Chapter 393

Evelyn couldn't help but roll her eyes.

This man was like a persistent ghost.

She had barely arrived in England when she "coincidentally" ran into him again.

"That day at the pharmacy," she narrowed her eyes, "was it really a coincidence?"

Alexander spread his hands. "I'm not psychic."

Fair enough.

"Maybe this is..." He paused. "Fate?"

"England is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. They believe in science."

"But they also believe in God."

"Does the Chinese matchmaker have jurisdiction overseas?"

Alexander chuckled. "Perhaps even matchmakers keep up with the times. Globalization and all."

Just then, the ICU door opened.

"Dr. Carter."

Evelyn hurried forward. "Dr. Zhang, how's my mother?"

Dr. Zhang removed his mask with a relaxed smile. "All her vitals are stable. She can be transferred to a regular room this afternoon."

"Thank goodness. Thank you."

"Don't mention it." Dr. Zhang glanced at Alexander and teased, "Though your husband here deserves some credit. He was your human pillow all night. My back ached just watching."

Evelyn's smile froze.

Alexander smoothly interjected, "Spouses should support each other. When my grandmother was hospitalized, Evelyn took excellent care of her too."

Dr. Zhang sighed. "Dr. Carter, you're truly blessed."

"No," Alexander's gaze softened, "I'm the lucky one to have married her."

"Goodness, how sweet." Dr. Zhang waved a hand, laughing. "I'll get back to work."

Once the doctor was out of earshot, Alexander mused, "Why does it seem like everyone here knows me?"

Evelyn shot him a glare. This man used to park his luxury SUV outside the hospital daily to pick her up. Of course he stood out.

That reminded her of something.

"With your credentials, how did Annabelle ever overlook you?"

Alexander raised a brow. "Remember Paul?"

"Linda's new husband?"

"He was also Annabelle's 'close friend.'"

Evelyn let out a knowing "Ah."

"Whatever their relationship was," Alexander shrugged, "she never admitted to anything."

"Did Paul's divorce involve her?"

"Not sure."

Evelyn scoffed. "Weren't you supposedly in love with her? Couldn't even handle the men around her?"

Alexander sighed. "You think I didn't try?"

"Failed?"

"Like a math problem where the tank never fills," he rubbed his temples, "because someone keeps draining it."

Evelyn's eyes widened in realization. "She added new 'friends' faster than you could remove the old ones?"

"She thrived on being the center of attention."

"So you just accepted it? Became a backup option?"

"Back then, I was just another 'close friend,'" Alexander said bitterly. "What right did I have to interfere?"

Evelyn nodded. "Got it. You never even made it to the shortlist."

Suddenly, Alexander pulled her phone from his inner pocket. "Gregory called you multiple times."

"Give it here. I'll call him back."

"No need." He slipped the phone back into his jacket. "I already answered."
