Chapter 390

Evelyn's brow furrowed slightly before smoothing out again.

"Whether you know or not doesn't matter anymore. You loved Annabelle for so many years—it couldn't have been just because of some childhood betrothal arranged by your parents, right?"

Alexander countered, "Do you think I'm that kind of person?"

"Can I ask you something first?"

"Go ahead."

"Annabelle and I are complete opposites in both looks and personality. You loved her for decades—how did that suddenly change?"

The corner of Alexander's lips lifted. "Feelings don't follow logic."

"Was it because you couldn't accept losing, or because of the baby?"

"Neither." Alexander asked again, "You really can't remember anything before you went missing?"

"Occasional fragments, but even those have become rare these past few years."

Alexander nodded. "Then don't force it. Living in the present is more important."

"Don't be so gentle with me. I wasn't close to my birth mother. I may worry, but I don't need comforting."

Alexander hummed in acknowledgment. "You rushed back overnight without resting. Get some sleep. I'll wake you when Aunt Lin comes to."

"What time is it?"

He raised his wrist to show her his watch.

"So late already."

"Sleep."

"What about you? Planning to keep vigil all night?"

"Mhm."

"Don't. I don't want to owe you favors. You should leave."

Her phone suddenly rang—Vivian calling.

"Viv?"

"It's me! Am I interrupting work?"

"...No, go ahead."

"My grandma's out of danger! I'm flying to England right now to be with you—heading to the airport now—"

"Don't come."

"Why? That bastard Alexander isn't even there! I need to protect you!"

"I'm back in the country too."

"Since when? I'm already at—"

The phone was plucked from her hand. Alexander spoke calmly, "She's safe with me. Focus on your grandmother."

A torrent of curses immediately erupted from the other end.

Alexander, prepared, held the phone away and waited patiently for five minutes.

"Done? Evelyn needs rest. Call tomorrow."

He decisively ended the call.

Evelyn reached for the phone. "Give it back!"

"That phone was a gift from me."

"I'll transfer the money."

He evaded her grasp. "You can have it back after you get proper sleep."

She stared at him intently. "Alexander."

"Yes?"

"I understand you less and less these days."

He chuckled softly. "No rush. Take your time. Even if you never understand—"

"It's enough that I do."
