Chapter 387

Margaret Hamilton sensed the tension in the air.

"Alexander, what's going on?"

Alexander Hamilton let out a bitter laugh.

"I asked you a question. What's so funny?"

He averted his gaze, closing his eyes in pain. "I'm laughing at myself."

Anthony Taylor looked bewildered. "Alexander, why are you reacting like this?"

Alexander remained silent, his brow furrowed.

Margaret spoke softly, "Anthony, let the young people handle their own affairs. Let's go check on Teresa."

Just then, the ICU doors opened.

"Dr. Carter—"

The hallway outside the ward was thick with unspoken emotions.

But Evelyn Carter remained eerily composed.

"How is the patient?"

"Her vitals have improved, but she's still too weak. She needs continued observation in the ICU. The patient is emotionally unstable—it would help if a family member could stay by the window to comfort her."

Anthony immediately volunteered, "I'll stay the night!"

"I'll do it," Evelyn cut in. "You need rest."

Anthony hesitated. "Evelyn..."

"Alexander."

"I'm here."

"Please take my father home."

Alexander's gaze softened. "I'll have Emily take him. I'll stay with you."

"That won't be necessary. Just see him home."

"Understood. I'll handle it."

"Margaret, thank you for visiting my mother. You should rest too."

Margaret looked at her with concern. "You can't do this alone. Someone should relieve you."

Evelyn shook her head. "I can't leave."

Everyone understood.

Teresa Taylor's heartache was Evelyn.

She was terrified of losing her daughter again.

Margaret suggested, "Let Alexander stay and help."

Evelyn knew what she was implying.

Her instinct was to refuse—to call Vivian instead.

But remembering Vivian's grandmother was also hospitalized, she let it go.

"What about me?" Annabelle Taylor suddenly spoke up. "I want to take care of Mom too."

Evelyn shot her a cold glance. "I don't want to see you."

Annabelle paled. "I'm their daughter too!"

"Take care of her?" Evelyn scoffed. "When you threatened suicide to force Mom to manipulate Alexander, where was your filial piety then?"

"I never forced her!"

"You knew she couldn't bear losing another daughter, yet you kept trying to kill yourself. What else would you call that?"
