Chapter 383

"Evelyn?"

Alexander Hamilton's deep voice came through the phone.

"......"

"Evelyn? Are you there?"

"Mhm."

"Why aren't you saying anything?"

"It's nothing."

"Mrs. Taylor's condition has worsened. The doctors say it might only be a matter of days. I'll come back to be with you once I've handled things here."

"Don't."

After hanging up, Evelyn immediately submitted a leave request to the hospital. The evening flight was fully booked, so she bought the earliest available ticket to Hudson City.

It was already late at night when she landed.

The taxi stopped in front of the hospital. Evelyn hurried into the lobby. The nurse at the reception desk widened her eyes in surprise. "Dr. Carter? You're back?"

"Please check Teresa Taylor's room number for me."

"Bed 63 on the 13th floor..."

The elevator doors opened on the 13th floor. The hallway was empty. Bed 63 was just an unoccupied hospital bed.

"Evelyn?"

Alexander appeared from around the corner, his brows furrowed. "What are you doing here?"

"Where is she?"

"Who?"

"Teresa Taylor."

"In the ICU."

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the strap of her bag.

Alexander took off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders. "You look pale."

She didn’t respond.

He gently pulled her into his arms. "Let’s get you home to rest first. I’ll have the driver take you."

As soon as he reached for his phone, Evelyn stopped him.

"Take me to see her."

"Mrs. Taylor?"

"Now."

Alexander studied her red-rimmed eyes and finally nodded. "Alright."

His jacket carried a faint sandalwood scent, warm and enveloping. With one arm around her shoulders and the other protectively at her back, they walked toward the ICU.

"The medical records are here—" Margaret Hamilton turned and gasped. "Evelyn?!"

"Aunt Margaret."

"You've lost so much weight!" Margaret cupped Evelyn’s face worriedly before turning to scold Alexander. "Why did you call Evelyn back? She’s so busy with work..."

Alexander silently endured his mother’s reprimand, only adjusting the jacket more securely around Evelyn.

The commotion caught the attention of Anthony Taylor, who had been keeping vigil outside the ICU. He staggered forward, tears streaming down his face. "Terry..."

Annabelle rushed to steady her swaying father. "Dad!"

Margaret also stepped in to help. "Anthony, be careful."

But Anthony seemed not to hear. His trembling hand reached for Evelyn. "Terry... she’s been asking for you..."

Alexander immediately shielded Evelyn. "Uncle Anthony, you’ve mistaken her for someone else."

"No mistake..." Anthony collapsed to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably. "Please... just go see her..."

Annabelle trembled with fury. "Dad! I’m your daughter!"
