Chapter 373
The scent of alcohol lingered in the air.
She frowned slightly.
Had he been drinking?
Alexander Hamilton's full weight pressed against her, his scorching breath grazing her neck.
Something was wrong.
She knew his alcohol tolerance well—he wouldn't be this drunk so easily.
Besides, Annabelle and that unfamiliar girl were still searching for him outside.
"What did you take?" she whispered.
He shook his head, his hair brushing her collarbone.
"Just a little wine..."
His lips nearly touched her skin, burning with unnatural heat.
Evelyn instinctively tried to pull away.
But Alexander tightened his grip on her shoulders. "I've been drugged."
Her chest constricted.
Of course.
"A woman who looked like you approached me," his voice grew hoarser, "I thought it was you."
That girl!
"She knows Annabelle."
Alexander scoffed. "More than just knows."
Footsteps approached outside.
"I heard something..." Annabelle's voice drew nearer.
"Me too."
The doorknob turned.
Alexander kicked the door shut with a sudden force.
BANG!
The violent sound made Evelyn flinch.
He chuckled darkly. "Scared?"
She turned her face away. "Stand properly."
"Can't," his breathing grew ragged, "the drug's too strong..."
"Go lie on the couch."
"Don't move..."
"You—"
"Keep struggling and I'll lose control."
She froze instantly.
Alexander's full weight pinned her, making her legs tremble from the strain.
Knocking resumed.
"Alexander? Are you in there?"
He cursed under his breath.
"What does Annabelle want?" Evelyn whispered.
"Who knows," his words slurred, "she promised to back off... then brought that woman..."
"Who is she?"
"No idea," his consciousness wavered, "Annabelle said... since she can't conceive... found some medical student... looked like you... wanted her to..."
Ice flooded Evelyn's veins.
"She planned to—"
"Yeah," Alexander gave a bitter laugh, "lucky I know your scent... that woman... called me 'Alexander'... but you'd never be this gentle..."
More pounding at the door.
"Anyone there?"
"Annabelle, maybe it's just the wind—"
"Wind doesn't slam doors," Annabelle raised her voice, "must be a burglar! I'll get security!"
