Chapter 359

The elevator doors opened, and Evelyn Carter immediately spotted the familiar figure.

Gregory Wilson was leaning against the wall, waiting for her.

"Not him."

Eric Whitmore dramatically shrugged. "Goodness, poor Greg. Still hasn't won you over."

Evelyn hung up her white coat. "No need for special treatment. Just treat me like any other colleague."

Eric winked. "You're sure you're not his girlfriend?"

"Positive."

The first day at work was uneventful.

As soon as her shift ended, she packed up and prepared to leave. Her phone's notes listed several apartment addresses she'd carefully selected.

The moment she stepped out of the hospital, a sharp honk nearly made her jump out of her skin.

Richard Jackson poked his head out of the car window, looking apologetic. "Sorry, sorry! Just got this car—still getting used to it."

Evelyn pressed a hand to her chest. "Here for a patient?"

"Yeah, visiting someone."

"Go ahead then. I’ll head out."

"Wait—" Richard quickly got out and blocked her path.

She gave him a puzzled look.

"You know your way around the hospital?"

She’d memorized the layout earlier that day.

"Where do you need to go?"

"Burn Department."

"Third floor, turn right. It's next to the nurse's station."

Richard scratched his head. "Mind showing me the way? I always get lost in hospitals."

Evelyn pointed to the information desk. "The nurses there can help."

"But I ran into you! Remember how I helped you at the pharmacy?"

Richard was genuinely kind—soft-spoken and good-natured.

No wonder Annabelle had chosen him back then.

"Come on, Dr. Carter. Do me a favor..."

Before she knew it, she was being ushered into the elevator. Richard swiftly pressed the button for the third floor.

The moment the doors closed, Evelyn realized she’d been tricked.

On the third floor, Richard blocked the doors again. "It’s to the right, right?"

The elevator descended without them.

Evelyn sighed. "All the way down the hall."

"Let’s go. Lead the way..."

When they pushed open the Burn Department doors, Alexander Hamilton was sitting with his back to them.

His entire back and arms were covered in horrific burns.

Hearing the noise, he turned his head.

Richard grinned. "Brought her here. I’ll go handle the paperwork."

Alexander nodded. "Thanks."

Two nurses were gently tending to his wounds.

He didn’t seem to feel any pain—his eyes were fixed on her. "Sit."

"How did you get hurt this badly?"

Alexander’s lips twitched. "You never asked."

"You’re surrounded by people who can take care of you."

"I’m human, not invincible. The wounds reopened in the rain."

Evelyn looked away. "Get proper treatment. I should go."

"Running away again?"
