Chapter 356

The nurse looked troubled. "That gentleman insists on a female doctor. We've explained multiple times already."

The male doctor frowned. "If it comes to it, we'll have to recommend they transfer hospitals."

"But his wife could go into labor any minute. Transferring now would be too risky—"

The nurse suddenly noticed Evelyn Carter standing at the end of the hallway and hurried over. "Excuse me, are you...?"

Evelyn was absorbed in reviewing maternity records when the voice interrupted her. "Can I help you?"

"I heard you're the new OB-GYN doctor starting today?"

"Yes, I'm Dr. Evelyn Carter."

The nurse exhaled in relief. "Perfect! Could you assist us with something?"

Inside the patient room, the nurse explained quietly. "This Chinese couple has a unique situation. The expectant mother strongly resists male doctors."

Evelyn quickly grasped the circumstances. The Chinese couple worked in England, and the wife, now in active labor, had deep psychological barriers against male physicians delivering her baby.

"Honey, the female doctor is here!" The husband called out in Mandarin when he saw Evelyn.

She gave a slight nod. "I'm Dr. Carter."

The husband beamed. "Thank goodness! Dr. Carter, my wife is about to give birth. Can you take over?"

"I'm sorry, but I just started. Hospital policy requires three months before new doctors can handle deliveries independently."

The wife's eyes welled up. "My friend had a terrible experience with a male doctor... I just can't..."

Before she could finish, the door swung open.

"Darling!"

The wife sat up, delighted. "You actually came? Weren't you preparing for your wedding?"

"How could I miss your delivery?" The newcomer laughed. "He insisted on coming too."

The wife pinched her husband's arm enviously. "Look at them!"

Her husband pouted. "I've been by your side this whole time!"

"It's not the same! Her fiancé is so thoughtful!" The wife turned to her friend. "You two are so sweet together. I'm jealous."

Her friend shook her head with a smile. "He just didn't want me traveling abroad alone."

"More like he couldn't bear to be apart!" The wife teased. "Unlike my blockhead husband..."

The husband gave Evelyn an embarrassed glance. "Dr. Carter, please excuse us..."

Evelyn's gaze lingered on the friend, her lips curving slightly.

This chance encounter was proving far more interesting than she'd anticipated.
