Chapter 333
Sunlight streamed through the hospital window as Vivian Dempsey sat by the bed, peeling an apple.
"Open up." She held out a small piece to Evelyn Carter. "I peeled this myself. You have to eat it all."
Evelyn obediently opened her mouth. The sweetness of the apple spread across her tongue.
The TV played a news segment: Police have identified a suspect in the dockyard arson case. Sources say the individual incurred massive debts from failed investments...
Vivian rolled her eyes. "They're really glossing over the details. Won't even mention a name."
She leaned closer to Evelyn, lowering her voice. "My dad asked around. Simon Stapleton has vanished without a trace."
Evelyn's fingers tapped lightly on her phone: Alexander Hamilton?
"Don't even ask," Vivian scoffed. "Hamilton Group's headquarters is business as usual. Cars come and go from the underground garage every day. But..." Her voice dropped further. "I heard there's security posted at an abandoned freezer warehouse on the outskirts of town."
Evelyn's hand stilled.
"Don't overthink it." Vivian patted her shoulder. "Focus on recovering first. Oh, I already booked our flights."
Evelyn typed quickly: The sooner, the better.
Three days later, Heathrow Airport, London.
"Welcome to England!" A blue-eyed blonde woman greeted them warmly. "I'm Laura, head of the hospital's international exchange program."
Vivian conversed fluently in English, occasionally translating for Evelyn.
During the hospital tour, Laura pointed to a red phone booth outside the window. "That's our landmark. All new doctors take photos there."
Evelyn smiled and nodded.
"Your office is on the fifth floor," Laura gestured. "Great view of the Thames."
As they exited the hospital, Vivian linked arms with Evelyn, excited. "Let's hit Chinatown for a proper meal, then go apartment hunting!"
The setting sun stretched their shadows long across the pavement. Evelyn gazed at the foreign sky and exhaled softly.
