Chapter 319
Anthony Taylor wore a gentle smile as he patted his wife's hand. "Let the young ones talk. We'd only make them uncomfortable. Uncle Dempsey mentioned wanting to see you earlier. Shall I take you to him?"
Teresa Taylor's gaze lingered on Evelyn Carter for a few seconds, hesitation flickering in her eyes. "Evelyn, we'll be back shortly."
Evelyn noticed the unspoken words trembling on Teresa's lips before they vanished.
"Alright."
As the couple walked away, Alexander Hamilton frowned. "They approached you privately?"
"Yes."
"What did they say?"
Evelyn swirled her orange juice, watching condensation slide down the glass. "Exactly what you'd expect."
Alexander's expression darkened. "Ignore them. Annabelle is their only daughter—spoiled rotten since childhood. If they bother you again, tell me immediately."
"Unnecessary." Evelyn's tone was flat. "I'm leaving the country soon. None of this matters."
Alexander stiffened. "You—"
Evelyn took a deliberate step back, eyes sharp with caution.
He chuckled dryly. "That defensive?"
"Precautionary measures."
"..."
"How was your quality time with the skeletons last time?"
Alexander's knuckles whitened, his voice rough. "What do you think?"
"I heard they remained perfectly still—not even a speck of dust disturbed." Evelyn arched a brow. "How... gentlemanly of you."
His eyes narrowed. "Don't pull that stunt again."
"Why not?"
"Do you want to be a widow?"
"I'll soon be free." A faint smile touched her lips. "They say Western culture is quite... liberal. If I feel inclined—"
"Trying to provoke me?" Alexander cut in.
"You overestimate your importance."
He smirked coldly. "Believe what you want. Just remember to protect yourself."
Evelyn blinked in surprise.
"Miss Carter—"
A flustered maid rushed over—the same one who'd earlier helped Vivian Dempsey adjust her gown.
"Here." Evelyn stood.
The maid wrung her hands. "Miss Carter, come quickly! Something's happened to Miss Vivian—"
"Another argument with Uncle Dempsey?"
"Worse!" The maid stamped her foot. "Hurry!"
Evelyn moved instantly.
Alexander stepped forward, but the maid blocked him. "Mr. Hamilton, it's better if you don't."
Evelyn glanced back. "Vivian's furious. Your presence would escalate things."
Understanding dawned. "Call me if needed."
"Mm."
The maid tugged Evelyn's sleeve. "Quickly! There's no time!"
