Chapter 304
Natalie's fingers twisted together nervously as her gaze darted between Simon and Alexander.
"Mr. Hamilton, this..."
Alexander stood with one hand in his pocket, completely at ease. "Don't worry, Miss Stapleton. He won’t cause any trouble today."
Evelyn braced herself against the doorframe, her nails digging into the wood. "Explain yourself before you come in."
"You really want me to say it now?" Alexander leaned in slightly, his breath brushing against her ear.
Evelyn jerked back half a step. "Don't you dare—"
"I missed you."
The words hit her like a thunderclap. Her fists clenched, knuckles turning white. "Missed me? So you brought him as an excuse?"
"What else could I do?" Alexander gave a bitter smile. "You’ve been avoiding me like the plague—changing shifts, dodging me at the hospital, even steering clear of your own apartment. If I hadn’t seized this chance, would you have even looked at me?"
Evelyn scoffed. "At least you’re self-aware."
"Which is why I had to corner you here." Alexander turned to Natalie with a slight nod. "Apologies for the intrusion."
Natalie stood awkwardly to the side, her eyes flickering between them.
Simon was already pulling a stack of documents from his briefcase. "Natalie, just sign here. Mr. Hamilton said he’d handle the paperwork—we can get the divorce certificate today!"
"Really?" Natalie’s eyes lit up as she looked at Alexander. "But your mother—"
"Don’t worry," Simon cut in, rubbing his hands together eagerly. "I’ll deal with my mom. Lora can’t wait—her family’s influential, we need to hurry with the wedding—"
"Wait!" Evelyn snatched the papers from him, flipping through the pages. "Forty pages?"
Alexander leaned against the doorframe, his gaze dark. "Not everyone gets a three-minute divorce like we did."
Evelyn’s fingers stilled.
Back then, she’d mailed the signed papers and received the divorce certificate within a week. He and Annabelle had been inseparable—no doubt he’d been desperate to cut ties.
"What about the asset division?"
"Everything goes to Natalie!" Simon blurted. "I’ll walk away with nothing! Lora’s pregnant, and her family—"
"What?!" Evelyn’s head snapped up, her eyes wide as she stared at Alexander. "Lora’s pregnant?"
Alexander adjusted his cufflinks leisurely. "Want to know?"
Suddenly, he grabbed Evelyn’s wrist. The moment Natalie finished signing, he pulled Evelyn into his arms.
"Now," he said, his voice low. "Come with me."
