Chapter 274

"Does Auntie Lucy know about your shady dealings?"

"She doesn't."

Evelyn Carter exhaled in relief. "Good. My mother is getting older. She can't handle this kind of shock."

Peter Harrison leaned against the wall, a cigarette between his fingers. "My mother never really cared about what I do."

"How did you know about my... cycle?"

"Emily told me."

"She volunteered that information?"

"Your little sister," Peter blew out a smoke ring, "is adorably naive. A few casual questions, and she spilled everything about you."

Evelyn frowned. "Emily genuinely thinks you're a good person."

"So?" Peter scoffed. "Want me to go apologize to her now?"

"At least don't badmouth her in front of me."

"Fine," Peter stubbed out his cigarette. "Then make sure I never see her again."

Evelyn pointed to the elevator. "You can leave right now."

Peter suddenly stepped closer. "Evelyn, I’ll actually miss you."

"Back off."

"What if we make this fake relationship real? I can give you everything Alexander Hamilton does."

Evelyn smirked. "Should I call Alexander right now?"

"Don’t," Peter raised his hands in surrender. "Just joking."

"What about Simon Stapleton—"

"Relax," Peter adjusted his tie. "The terms Mr. Hamilton offered were too good. I’m out."

Evelyn locked eyes with him. "You’d better be."

"I’m leaving for S City at the end of the month," Peter said suddenly, his tone serious. "Let’s just say we weren’t compatible."

"That’s too obvious."

"Then what do you suggest?"

Evelyn thought for a moment. "Say it was due to work relocation. The distance made it hard."

"Whatever." Peter turned and pressed the elevator button. "By the way, I leave at month’s end. Good luck with your overseas assignment."

......

Vivian Dempsey burst into the café like a whirlwind. Evelyn was reviewing relocation documents when her best friend snatched the file from her hands.

"Big news!" Vivian gasped. "Simon Stapleton is getting married!"

Evelyn arched a brow. "That fast?"

"Unbelievable, right?" Vivian gulped down her iced americano. "Dad says Oceanic Group is already planning the wedding."

"Lora agreed?"

"Apparently she’s head over heels," Vivian rolled her eyes. "Dad’s dying to know who this mystery groom is."

Evelyn chuckled. "Mr. Dempsey pushing you to date again?"

"Ugh! I’m escaping abroad with you!" Vivian crunched an ice cube angrily.

"Perfect timing," Evelyn closed the folder. "I leave at month’s end."

A shadow fell across their table.

The sharp click of stilettos approached.

A woman with crimson lips smiled down at them. "Dr. Carter? I’ve heard so much about you."
