Chapter 272

Evelyn set down her chopsticks. "Emily's scores should be enough for Hudson University."

"Hudson University..." Grace mused.

"Mom, what are you thinking?"

Grace's eyes lit up. "Peter works at a state-owned enterprise, right? Since we'll be family soon, I want Emily to study architecture or civil engineering. After graduation, Peter can help arrange a position for her."

Evelyn frowned slightly. "Mom, a state-owned enterprise might not suit Emily."

"Why not? They offer stability and regular paychecks. With Emily's temperament, expecting her to work overtime for promotions is unrealistic."

"But—"

"Why don't you invite Peter over for dinner? We can ask him about the opportunities at his company."

Evelyn lowered her gaze. "He's been very busy lately."

"Still busy? What about your wedding plans?" Grace grew anxious. "Your father and I were thinking of an engagement after the New Year and a wedding in May."

Evelyn shook her head. "The timing isn't clear yet. Let's eat first, Mom, Dad."

The doorbell rang suddenly.

Emily jumped up. "It must be Peter! I'll get it."

Grace smiled and stood. "I'll set another place."

Emily's voice carried from the doorway. "Who are you looking for?"

"I'm here to see Dr. Carter... I messaged her this afternoon but didn't get a reply. I’m sorry for interrupting your dinner."

Annabelle stood outside, snowflakes dusting her fur collar, her expression uneasy.

Emily turned and called, "Evelyn, someone's here for you."

Grace came out with an extra set of utensils. "Who is this...?"

"She's a former patient of mine," Evelyn said.

Annabelle bowed politely. "Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. Dr. Carter performed my surgery."

"You must have urgent business to come so late. Come in and sit down," Grace offered warmly.

Annabelle quickly waved her hands. "No need, Mrs. Anderson. I’ll just say a few words here."

Emily tilted her head, studying her. "You look familiar. Have we met before?"

Evelyn stood immediately. "Let’s talk outside."

Annabelle nodded to the room. "Enjoy your meal. We won’t be long."

Andrew suddenly frowned. "She does look familiar."

Emily agreed. "Right? I knew I’d seen her before."

Grace ladled rice into bowls. "Nonsense. Evelyn’s patients are all from the OB-GYN department. When would either of you have gone there?"

Emily stuck out her tongue. "True, maybe I’m mistaken. Wow, shrimp for dinner!"

"Don’t pick through it—save some for your sister..."

Evelyn slipped on her coat and stepped out.

The door closed, muffling the cheerful chatter inside.

Annabelle gestured toward the street. "My car’s downstairs. Should we talk there?"
