Chapter 212
Evelyn Carter had long left that naive first love behind.
No matter how beautiful youthful infatuation was, it couldn't withstand life's harsh realities. Mortgages, renovations, daily necessities—these were the truths of adulthood.
In high school, she'd always been drawn to that athletic figure on the basketball court. Her heart would skip a beat whenever the teacher called his name.
But so what?
Almost none of her friends had escaped the fate of first love ending in heartbreak.
Compared to Vivian Dempsey's tragic experience, her own peaceful breakup was fortunate.
And Alexander Hamilton—pining for over twenty years as the backup.
Though now, he'd finally gotten what he wanted, hadn't he?
Evelyn wasn't sure if this counted as her first love.
But she knew with certainty—her marriage to Alexander definitely wasn't.
There'd been no love when they married, and their divorce had been civil. Though briefly painful, she'd moved on quickly.
Except for the child they'd lost...
"Evelyn?" Peter Harrison's voice pulled her back to the present.
She handed him the documents. "Everything's here."
"Let's go in then."
The realtor's words hit them like a bucket of cold water.
"I'm terribly sorry, but the unit you reserved was just purchased by someone else."
Peter frowned. "I already paid the deposit."
"Headquarters has authorized triple refund. I can take you to finance now."
"This isn't about money. Who bought it?"
After hesitation, the agent pointed behind them. "That gentleman there."
Alexander approached leisurely, his tall frame accentuated by the charcoal gray suit. The black armband on his left sleeve stood out starkly.
"Evelyn."
She suppressed her fury. "What exactly are you trying to do?"
"You mentioned liking this development." He glanced around, voice mild. "It is nice—close to the hospital, good school district."
"Alexander."
"Hmm?"
"Did you plan this?"
Adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses, he admitted easily, "Yes."
A bitter laugh escaped her. "You think this is funny?"
Alexander glanced at Peter. "Mr. Harrison must have work. I'll drive Evelyn to the hospital."
"Alexander!" She shoved him hard.
He barely staggered before steadying himself. "I told you—I regret it."
"That's not my problem! We're divorced!"
"Then let's remarry."
"Have you lost your mind?!"
