Chapter 184

"What's wrong?"

Grace Anderson's face turned pale. "Your father and I just saw a notice from the neighborhood office downstairs... Our area is being demolished."

Evelyn Carter looked up sharply. "Since when?"

"The notice says we have to move out before National Day."

It was already July—less than three months left.

"So sudden? There was no warning?"

Andrew Anderson sighed. "There were rumors before, but your mother and I didn’t take them seriously. This was a company welfare apartment—small and old. The compensation won’t be much..."

Evelyn immediately understood her parents' worries. She steadied herself. "I still have some vacation days left. I’ll help you find a rental first."

Her mother gave a bitter smile. "Renting isn’t the issue. But what about you and your sister? Your father and I were just ordinary workers. We’d hoped selling this place could give you girls a little extra..."

"Don’t worry. I’ll save up for a few more years. Emily’s still in college—she might buy her own place someday."

Andrew scoffed. "You? Maybe. But Emily? She’s still a child. You tutored right after high school. All she cares about is that physics professor."

"Dad, don’t underestimate her. She’s my sister. She’ll be fine."

"She’s not even—"

"Andrew!" Grace cut in sharply.

He caught himself and muttered, "Even dragons have different offspring. Forget it. Just go back to the hospital after your break. Take too long, and someone might take your spot. That job’s stable and respectable—don’t slack off."

Evelyn nodded. "I know."

"You’ve always been the reliable one. Not like your sister..."

She changed the subject. "By the way, why the sudden demolition? We’re so far from downtown."

Andrew shrugged. "Old Li downstairs said some company wants to build an amusement park here."

Evelyn’s mind raced.

The land was cheap—perfect for low-cost demolition.

"Auntie Lucy mentioned Peter’s design firm is handling the project."

"Really?"

"Yeah, but they only do the planning. They don’t decide demolition."

Evelyn tensed. "What company’s on the notice?"

"Uh... Great Enterprise Construction?"

Her stomach dropped.

Great Enterprise Construction.

She’d never met her ex-father-in-law, but she knew Alexander’s father was named William Hamilton.

Maybe she was overthinking.

The Hamiltons specialized in luxury homes and hotels—nothing to do with amusement parks.

She pulled out her phone and searched.

The screen flashed: Great Enterprise Construction, wholly owned subsidiary of Hamilton Group.

Evelyn let out a cold laugh.

She grabbed her phone and headed for the door.

Grace called after her, "Evelyn! Dinner’s almost ready!"

"Go ahead. I need to make a call."
