Chapter 121
Alexander Hamilton's voice was low and hoarse. "If that's what you think, then so be it."
Evelyn Carter's brows instantly furrowed.
She stared coldly at Alexander.
What kind of nonsense was this?
Drunken antics?
Or was he deliberately trying to provoke her?
Her sharp gaze sobered him slightly. His tone softened. "These days, whenever I'm not with you, you assume I'm with her."
Perhaps his self-deprecating attitude was too obvious, because Annabelle Taylor didn't seem suspicious this time.
"Fine. See you in twenty minutes. I'll send you the location."
Alexander ended the call abruptly and turned off his phone.
Silence finally returned.
He leaned back on the sofa and exhaled heavily.
"Aren't you afraid she'll make a scene after you turned off your phone?"
Alexander smirked. "Then I just won't go back."
Evelyn responded immediately. "Need a hotel? I'll have Emily arrange it."
"Evelyn."
"..."
"Don't worry. I won't stay the night."
Caught off guard, Evelyn maintained her composure.
"A man and a woman alone together should avoid impropriety."
Alexander gave a noncommittal hum.
"More water?"
"Yeah."
After a few sips of warm water, his drunkenness gradually faded.
Evelyn found it darkly amusing.
Arguing worked better than sobering medicine.
Maybe she should just pick fights with drunk patients during night shifts from now on.
Alexander pushed himself up from the sofa. "I'm leaving."
"Goodbye."
He scoffed. "So formal?"
"Basic courtesy."
"Basic courtesy..."
Alexander nodded slowly. "Right. I won't disturb you further."
"Don't come back."
He gave her one last lingering look before turning away.
The door slammed shut behind him.
Standing outside, he stared at the closed door, all his unspoken words dissolving into a sigh.
......
The next morning, Evelyn went straight to Natalie Stapleton's hospital room.
As soon as she entered the office, Olivia Lightfoot sidled up to her mysteriously. "Dr. Carter."
Evelyn removed her coat and slipped on her white lab coat.
"Speak."
"The director's daughter has terrible taste in men."
Evelyn paused mid-motion.
Something must have happened yesterday.
She buttoned up and grabbed the medical chart. "Did Natalie hemorrhage again last night?"
Olivia hurried after her. "It was pretty bad. Scared me half to death."
Evelyn flipped through the chart. "Dr. Porter handled it?"
"Thankfully she was here. But..." Olivia lowered her voice. "The surgical consent form still isn't signed."
Evelyn smirked coldly.
Simon Stapleton had been too busy sucking up to Annabelle yesterday to bother coming to the hospital.
"Have the family member sign it immediately when they arrive."
"They're already here."
"Simon?"
"His mother." Olivia rolled her eyes. "She forced Natalie to drink some fertility concoction."
"...People still believe in that nonsense?"
Olivia pursed her lips. "She started hemorrhaging right after drinking it."
