Chapter 100

The clerk glanced up at Evelyn Carter, surprised to find her expression calm, even with a faint smile at the corners of her lips.

"Is there an issue with the documents?" Evelyn asked softly.

"Everything seems complete."

"That's good."

The clerk flipped through the papers. "Have you settled the child custody arrangements?"

Evelyn's fingers trembled slightly.

Alexander Hamilton turned his face away.

"We don't have children," Evelyn murmured, her voice barely audible.

"That simplifies things." The clerk stamped the papers briskly. "Does the husband have any objections?"

Alexander shook his head. "Proceed as she wishes."

The clerk suddenly chuckled. "Faking a divorce to buy property? I've seen it all before."

Evelyn frowned. "You misunderstand."

"Look behind you," the clerk said, nodding toward the queue.

Couples waiting in line were either locked in heated arguments, standing like strangers, or with mistresses openly clinging to their new partners.

"Now that's a real divorce," the clerk remarked confidently. "You two acting all polite—who are you trying to fool?"

Evelyn gave a bitter smile. "There really is no love between us."

"Then why marry in the first place?"

Alexander abruptly stood, pulling Evelyn toward the exit. She winced as her injured leg protested the sudden movement.

He immediately knelt, lifting her skirt to reveal the bandage around her calf. His knuckles whitened. "I'm sorry."

Evelyn tugged her skirt back down. "We can talk calmly."

"Does it still hurt?"

"The painkillers are working."

Without another word, Alexander helped her sit, his warmth seeping through her sleeve. His gaze lingered on her injury, his brow furrowed.

"It's just a minor wound," Evelyn said, trying to lighten the mood.

"Don't say that," Alexander replied tightly. "Did the hospital give you leave?"

"The bloodmobile work is light," she deflected. "About the property..."

"I'll figure it out."

"The law is clear."

A scoff came from near the water cooler. The clerk sipped her tea with a knowing look. "The act crumbling already?"
