Chapter 484
Without another word, Nathan turned on his heel and walked away.
"Nathan!" Serena's desperate cry echoed through the air.
He didn't even flinch, his broad shoulders set in rigid determination as he strode toward the exit.
"No—" Serena's anguished scream tore through the silence as she collapsed to her knees, fingers clawing at her perfectly styled hair.
The hospital corridors buzzed with whispers all afternoon. Everywhere Evelyn went, she felt the weight of curious stares from her colleagues. Some nurses eyed her with barely concealed jealousy, while the interns regarded her with newfound wariness. She ignored them all, focusing on her charts with practiced indifference.
As evening fell, Evelyn changed out of her scrubs and headed toward the parking garage. The moment she spotted the familiar silhouette leaning against her car, her steps faltered.
Nathan stood waiting, his imposing frame illuminated by the flickering garage lights. When their eyes met, electricity crackled between them. Evelyn was the first to look away, marching purposefully toward her vehicle.
Her fingers had just brushed the door handle when Nathan's hand shot out, blocking her path. "We need to talk," he said, his deep voice resonating in the concrete space.
Evelyn tilted her chin up, meeting his intense gaze without flinching. "Mr. Black, I believe I've made my position clear. There's nothing left to say."
She attempted to open the door again, but Nathan's grip was unyielding. A silent battle of wills ensued, their locked gazes speaking volumes.
After what felt like an eternity, Nathan finally released his hold. Evelyn wasted no time slipping into the driver's seat and slamming the door shut with deliberate force. From fastening her seatbelt to revving the engine, she pointedly avoided looking his way.
Through her rearview mirror, she saw Nathan watching her departure before climbing into his own luxury car. Soon, his headlights appeared behind her, maintaining a steady distance no matter how many turns she took.
When they reached her neighborhood, Evelyn abruptly pulled over. Storming toward Nathan's vehicle, she rapped sharply on his window. He emerged with infuriating calm.
"Nathan, how long do you intend to stalk me?" Evelyn demanded, her voice tight with frustration.
His response came measured and low. "There's something important we need to discuss, Evelyn."
"Will you leave me alone if I refuse?" she countered icily.
Nathan said nothing, his piercing gaze answering for him.
Evelyn exhaled sharply, closing her eyes briefly before meeting his stare again. "Fine. What is it?"
"I owe you an apology. I never expected Serena to confront you like that," Nathan said, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
Evelyn blinked, momentarily caught off guard before regaining her composure. "Apology accepted. Anything else?"
Nathan stepped closer, his intense eyes searching hers. "Serena lashed out because I told her our engagement was over." He paused, his next words deliberate. "I've come to realize... my feelings for you run deeper than I imagined."
