Chapter 285
Nathan saw through her scheme immediately. She wanted him to declare to the world that they were truly in love, didn’t she? But if he did that, what would become of Evelyn? How would the public perceive her then?
As Nathan’s expression darkened, Serena’s heart sank. She rushed to explain, her voice trembling, “I’m sorry, Nathan. I—I panicked. My social media is flooded with hateful comments. It’s humiliating. I didn’t know what else to do, so I thought—”
Before she could finish, Nathan cut her off sharply. “Enough, Serena. I’m busy. You should go.”
His tone was final, leaving no room for argument.
Serena bit her lip, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears as she stared at him. But Nathan had already turned his attention back to his documents, effectively dismissing her.
Swallowing her pride, she whispered, “Alright, Nathan. I’ll leave you to your work.”
The moment she turned away, hot tears spilled down her cheeks. She wasn’t blind—she had noticed Nathan’s growing impatience with her. Even now, as the world dragged her name through the mud, he refused to lift a finger.
She knew why. Clearing her name would only make Evelyn the villain in the public’s eyes. Nathan would never allow that. He wouldn’t tarnish Evelyn’s reputation, even if it meant leaving Serena to suffer.
The realization twisted like a knife in her chest.
Serena wasn’t sure she could wait any longer for Nathan and Evelyn’s inevitable divorce. She couldn’t afford to sit back and hope. These small schemes were useless—they would never drive them apart.
She needed something decisive. Something that would end their marriage for good.
Wiping away her tears, Serena’s expression hardened. A glint of cold determination flickered in her eyes.
Meanwhile, at Vera Vis, Evelyn visited her grandmother during her lunch break.
After their meal, Evelyn pulled Eleanor aside and explained the social media controversy in detail.
Eleanor’s face darkened as she listened. “That Serena has no shame!” she spat. Then, after a pause, she added, “And that scoundrel Nathan is just as bad!”
Evelyn chuckled softly but didn’t argue. Eleanor’s blunt words mirrored her own thoughts.
Eleanor reached out and took Evelyn’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. With a heavy sigh, she said, “My dear, it breaks my heart to see you like this. Why… why did you ever fall for that man?”
Evelyn exhaled slowly. “Feelings aren’t always easy to explain.”
“True,” Eleanor conceded. “But it’s good you’ve decided to divorce him. The sooner, the better. Dragging this out won’t do either of you any favors.”
Evelyn bit her lip at the mention of the impending divorce. “Grandma… do you really want us to separate that badly?”
Eleanor’s gaze was firm. “Absolutely. I didn’t raise you all these years just to watch you waste your life in a loveless marriage with a man who doesn’t appreciate you. I never approved of this union from the start. You two were never meant to be.”
