Chapter 388
"Evelyn is utterly vicious! How could she shove Serena down those stairs? Doesn't she realize she might have killed her?" Dylan exploded, his voice trembling with barely contained rage.
Nathan stood motionless nearby, his face an unreadable mask. But his white-knuckled fists betrayed the tempest raging inside him. He'd witnessed everything—the horrifying moment Serena lost her footing, Evelyn's outstretched hand frozen in midair. The evidence was irrefutable: Evelyn had pushed her.
What made it worse was remembering Evelyn rejecting Alexander's confession of love earlier that evening. The memory only fueled Nathan's growing fury.
"Serena, how are you feeling?" Dylan's concerned voice snapped Nathan back to the present.
Serena stirred weakly, her eyelids fluttering open. A pained grimace twisted her delicate features. "It hurts... so much," she whimpered, tears glistening in her doe-like eyes.
Dylan softened his tone immediately. "The doctors have treated your injuries. Just rest now."
Nathan moved closer to the hospital bed, his shadow falling over Serena.
Leaning down, his voice came out rough and low. "Serena, what were you doing upstairs?" It was common knowledge—guests weren't permitted in the private quarters without invitation.
Serena bit her plump lower lip, guilt flashing across her face. "I saw Evelyn going up. There was something important I needed to tell her, so I followed quietly."
After a weighted pause, she added hastily, "I'm sorry, Nathan. I know I shouldn't have gone up there uninvited. That was wrong of me."
"What exactly did you discuss?" Nathan pressed, his tone turning arctic.
Serena hesitated before whispering, "I just reminded Evelyn about her promise to divorce you. That's all." Fresh tears welled up. "I never imagined she'd react like this... if I'd known, I would never have approached her." Her voice cracked with genuine remorse.
Dylan cut in angrily, "This isn't your fault! You were simply holding Evelyn accountable for her own words! Leonard himself said the divorce would proceed after his birthday celebration. Knowing Evelyn, she'd find another excuse to delay. You were being reasonable!"
He shook his head in frustration. "Serena, your kindness will be your downfall," he muttered.
Nathan's expression remained stony, his dark eyes giving nothing away. When he finally spoke, each word landed like a hammer blow.
"Serena, I've warned you before—stay out of my marriage."
The words struck Serena like a physical blow.
All color drained from her face as she stared at Nathan in stunned disbelief.
Her lips parted slightly as if to respond, but no sound emerged.
"Get some rest," Nathan said curtly, turning on his heel before she could react.
As Nathan strode toward the door, Dylan called after him, "Nathan—" But the door clicked shut with finality, cutting off any further protest.
