Chapter 436
The moment Evelyn caught the sharp edge in Nathan's tone, her delicate brows arched slightly in response.
Nathan didn't beat around the bush. He cut straight to the chase.
"We've consulted your physician," he stated matter-of-factly. "He confirmed your allergic reaction was caused by consuming artichokes. Our investigation revealed the hospital cafeteria served no dishes containing artichokes yesterday. So where exactly did you have your breakfast?"
Evelyn pressed her lips together briefly before answering truthfully, "I didn't eat at the cafeteria. I had the breakfast my mother prepared for me."
Nathan's expression remained stern as he continued, "Dr. Hartley, you're well aware of Grand View General's regulations. All surgeons scheduled for procedures must consume only meals provided by the hospital cafeteria—emergency surgeries being the sole exception. This protocol exists to guarantee food safety and prevent any complications that might affect patients. You knew the rules. You knew you had surgery scheduled yesterday morning. Why then did you disregard protocol?"
Faced with Nathan's direct questioning, Evelyn bit her lower lip, momentarily speechless.
The hospital's policies were clear, and she'd knowingly violated them—all because she couldn't bring herself to reject Grace's thoughtful gesture.
"My mistake," Evelyn admitted without hesitation, offering no excuses.
Seeing her immediate acknowledgment, Nathan's rigid posture relaxed marginally.
"Very well," he conceded.
"Your violation of protocol caused your allergic reaction and endangered a patient. According to hospital regulations, disciplinary action will be taken. Any objections?"
Evelyn lowered her gaze. After a brief silence, she responded evenly, "None."
"Good. Focus on your recovery. Rest well."
With that, Nathan turned sharply and exited the room, his team filing out behind him.
The instant the door closed, Evelyn collapsed back onto her pillows, her body sinking into the crisp hospital sheets.
She'd expected this outcome long before it arrived.
Grand View General Hospital never compromised on its rules.
No exceptions. No special treatment. Consequences came for everyone equally.
In that regard, the institution maintained perfect equity among its staff.
Evelyn's disciplinary measures were implemented with startling efficiency.
Within two hours, the notice appeared on every bulletin board throughout the hospital.
The penalties were severe: a three-month suspension of Evelyn's performance bonuses coupled with an official reprimand to be circulated hospital-wide.
