Chapter 414
Evelyn was resolute in breaking free from the past.
All she wanted now was to carve her own destiny, far away from Nathan Black.
Little did she know, Nathan hadn't actually left the hospital.
He stepped aside, pulled out his phone, and dialed Walter. "Escort Evelyn home," he ordered tersely.
As the call ended, frustration coiled tightly in his chest.
Why was he still doing this?
Evelyn had made it painfully clear she wanted nothing to do with him.
Yet, leaving her alone in that state was unthinkable.
Nathan raked a hand through his hair, torn between duty and desire.
The divorce had left him feeling like a stranger to himself.
He barely recognized the man he'd become.
Only when Evelyn limped into Walter's car did Nathan finally turn away.
At The Velvet Lounge, a voice cut through the murmur of conversation.
"Did you hear? Nathan Black and Evelyn Hartley are already divorced."
Lila Sinclair froze mid-step, her stiletto hovering above the marble floor.
Her pulse spiked as the words registered.
Divorced? Already?
A man at the nearby booth leaned in conspiratorially.
"That news has been circulating in our circles for weeks."
"But why would Black suddenly divorce her?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Another man smirked, swirling his whiskey. "Serena Cole. Evelyn pushed her down the stairs, and bam—divorce papers filed the next day."
A third guest sighed dramatically.
"Seems Black never stopped loving his ex after all. If Leonard Grant hadn't forced them apart years ago, Serena would be Mrs. Black by now."
Lila's lips curled into a triumphant smile.
This was better than she'd dared hope.
"Honestly," a voice sneered, "Evelyn's downfall was inevitable. Imagine being discarded right after your true identity as Black's wife was revealed. Pathetic."
"But Leonard clearly favors her as a daughter-in-law. He defended her publicly at the gala."
"What does that matter?" The first man scoffed. "The Grant empire answers to Nathan now. Without his affection, Evelyn's nothing. We should all start paying our respects to Serena—she's clearly the future."
Lila's manicured nails dug into her clutch.
Finally, karma was delivering justice.
She'd always known Nathan could never truly love that nobody.
The champagne in her glass suddenly tasted sweeter.
This called for celebration.
