Chapter 248
But there was no point in holding on anymore.
It was all meaningless.
Their divorce was inevitable.
Even if Nathan Black cared for her—maybe even had feelings for her—what would it change? What difference would it make in the end?
Evelyn Hartley let out a quiet sigh, her fingers tightening around her phone.
So what if Nathan felt something for her? A flicker of affection? A fleeting moment of tenderness? It wasn’t enough. She was exhausted.
She refused to spend her life chasing after scraps of love from a man who could never fully commit to her.
It would only drain her, just as it already had.
Instead of clinging to false hope, she knew it was better to walk away.
After all, from the very beginning…
Both of them had wanted this divorce. Desperately. Without hesitation.
On the other end of the line, Alexander Prescott exhaled heavily, frustration creeping into his voice.
He could hear the finality in Evelyn’s tone. She had already given up on her marriage to Nathan, and for some reason, that realization left him with a pang of regret.
He had always believed they shouldn’t end things like this.
Before he could argue further, Evelyn spoke again, her voice firm. "I have work to finish, Alexander. I’m hanging up now."
"Fine," he relented, though his tone was heavy with reluctance.
The call ended, and Evelyn tucked her phone away, turning her attention back to her documents.
Her expression remained composed, untouched by the conversation—as if the weight of her crumbling marriage meant nothing to her.

"How is she, Doctor?" a deep voice asked.
"Thanks to the quick response of the attending physician, we managed to stabilize her," the doctor replied. "She’s out of immediate danger."
He paused, adjusting his glasses before continuing, "However, she must avoid any physical strain in the future. And she must carry her heart medication at all times."
"Understood," the man nodded. "Thank you."
The doctor left, and the man’s gaze lingered on the unconscious woman in the bed.
After a long moment, he turned and walked out, the door clicking shut behind him.
