Chapter 477
A satisfied smirk curled on Franklin's lips.
"Excellent!" he declared. "This evidence will guarantee the Sterlings' cooperation from now on."
Donovan nodded vigorously, eyes gleaming with approval.
"We must visit the Caldwell residence immediately to apologize to Marcus and the others. Pray they'll show us mercy," Franklin stated firmly.
"Understood," Donovan replied promptly.
Meanwhile, in the VIP suite of Grand Ins General Hospital, Serena's face darkened as she processed the news. A cold dread crept into her chest.
The sharp rap of knuckles interrupted her thoughts before the door swung open. Nathan strode in with purposeful steps.
"You came," Serena breathed, hastily straightening her posture. She'd summoned him urgently - this matter demanded immediate attention.
Nathan settled into the chair beside her bed with deliberate calm.
"Rumors are circulating," Serena began carefully, "that you're punishing the Sinclairs because Donovan attempted to drug Ms. Hartley during their dinner. Is this accurate?"
"Absolutely," Nathan confirmed without hesitation.
Serena's carefully maintained composure cracked at his blunt admission. Forcing a strained smile, she continued, "Given Ms. Hartley is your ex-wife, I understand your need to intervene."
Nathan's piercing gaze held hers for a long moment before he spoke. "I came to deliver important news."
Serena's pulse stuttered.
"W-what is it?" she stammered.
"I owe you an apology. I must retract my promise." His voice remained steady, betraying no emotion.
Serena's eyes narrowed to slits. Her trembling lips parted as she demanded, "Nathan, what exactly do you mean?"
"I can't marry you." The words fell like a guillotine's blade.
The declaration struck Serena like a physical blow. Her world tilted violently, the ground crumbling beneath her. Several agonizing seconds passed before she could form words.
Her face turned ashen. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible. "Why? Is this... because of Ms. Hartley?"
Nathan met her gaze unflinchingly. "Yes. I've realized I'm in love with Evelyn," he confessed.
Serena's entire body went rigid. Her pupils dilated as the truth sank in - this wasn't a nightmare, but devastating reality. Disbelief warred with anguish in her shattered expression.
