Chapter 400

Nathan was still buried in paperwork when his phone buzzed violently against the mahogany desk. The sudden vibration made his fountain pen skid across the contract he was reviewing.

He grabbed the device, thumb swiping to reveal a WhatsApp notification from Theodore. A video attachment glowed ominously on the screen.

His pulse quickened as he tapped play. The moment Evelyn's face appeared, his breath hitched. But as the footage continued, his knuckles turned white around the phone.

Who the hell was this punk touching his wife?

Before he could process the rage boiling in his veins, another message arrived - a voice note this time. Theodore's smug voice filled the silent office.

"Got this little gem from an anonymous sender. Seems someone wants you to know your wife's been cozying up with some young stud." The mocking tone dripped with barely concealed amusement.

Nathan's jaw clenched so tight his molars ached. So this was Evelyn's new life post-divorce. How... entertaining.

He told himself the fury coiling in his gut was purely about reputation. About the humiliation of people thinking his ex-wife was parading around with some boy toy. It had nothing to do with jealousy. Absolutely nothing.

With measured precision, he typed out a reply. "Evelyn and I are done. Don't bother updating me on her activities anymore."

Sixty seconds hadn't passed when his phone rang. Theodore's name flashed across the screen.

Nathan answered with a terse, "What?"

"You're really cutting ties with Evelyn?" Theodore's voice carried undisguised curiosity.

"We're divorced," Nathan stated evenly, though his grip threatened to crack the phone's screen. "Her life is no longer my concern. Clear?"

The silence on the other end was palpable. Theodore clearly hadn't expected this development. The reality that Nathan had actually let Evelyn go seemed to stun him into momentary speechlessness.

"You actually let her walk away?" The question slipped out before Theodore could censor himself.

Nathan recoiled as if struck. "Of course I did!" His voice rose half an octave. "This is exactly what I wanted, isn't it? Finally free of that marriage. Couldn't be happier!"

A beat of silence. Then, as if remembering something, he added sharply, "Weren't you the one who promised to celebrate my freedom? Tomorrow works."

Theodore exhaled audibly. It was painfully obvious to him that Nathan had developed feelings for Evelyn, even if the stubborn bastard refused to admit it. This divorce reeked of regret already.

"Fine," Theodore conceded. "Tomorrow night. I'll pick the place and text you details."

"Perfect." Nathan ended the call with a violent stab of his finger. He inhaled deeply, trying to quell the storm raging inside him. But as he attempted to refocus on work, Evelyn's voice echoed in his mind: "He's under my protection."

Goddammit!

With a vicious curse, Nathan slammed his laptop shut, grabbed his keys, and stormed out. When he arrived at the Grant family estate, he found Leonard still awake in the study. The older man took one look at his son's thunderous expression and sighed.

"Well?" Leonard's voice was ice. "Are you pleased with how this turned out?"
