Chapter 442
Evelyn propped herself up slightly on the hospital bed, her distant gaze fixed on the horizon outside the window.
She had known this would happen.
Yet when she saw Nathan choose Serena over her without a second thought, the pain still cut through her heart like shards of glass.
At least they were already divorced.
She clung to the hope that with time, these lingering feelings would fade.
One day, nothing he did would affect her anymore.
Taking a deep breath, Evelyn schooled her features into perfect neutrality.
Inside the elevator, Nathan carefully lowered Serena back into her wheelchair.
His voice was low when he spoke. "You're injured. You shouldn't be moving around like this."
Serena's eyes flickered with something unreadable.
Was he actually scolding her for visiting Evelyn?
"Nathan, Dylan and I just wanted to check on Evelyn," Dylan quickly interjected.
Nathan's icy glare silenced him. "Since when are you friends with Evelyn?"
He knew exactly how Evelyn felt about these two.
Dylan opened his mouth, then closed it again.
Finally, he muttered, "We won't bother her again."
Only then did some tension leave Nathan's shoulders.
After settling Serena in her room, Nathan took the chair beside her bed. "Rest now," he said tonelessly.
Serena worried her lower lip between her teeth. "Nathan... are you still planning to stay with Ms. Hartley?"
"Yes."
"Can't you refuse?" Her voice trembled. "You're divorced now. She's not your responsibility anymore."
"My father requested it."
"You could say no!" Serena insisted.
A quiet sniffle escaped her. "It hurts me," she whispered, "seeing you in her room like this."
Nathan's response was measured. "Divorced or not, Evelyn was my wife."
Serena's face fell instantly.
His words...
Did he still feel some obligation toward Evelyn? If so, how could they ever truly move on?
No. She wouldn't allow this.
