Chapter 428
Leonard dismissed her with a careless wave. "Your promises mean nothing to me. The decision is final. If you refuse Nathan's presence, I'll personally supervise you. Is that what you desire?"
Evelyn's shoulders sagged in resignation. "Leonard..."
"Enough," Leonard's voice cut through like steel. "I'm leaving now. Nathan remains with you."
He rose, turning his piercing gaze toward Nathan. "Watch over her. If anything happens, I'll hold you responsible."
With that, Leonard adjusted his cane and strode toward the door.
"Leonard!" Evelyn called out, one last attempt at protest.
But he didn't even glance back, merely offering a dismissive hand gesture as he exited.
The door clicked shut, plunging the room into heavy silence.
The air between Evelyn and Nathan grew thick with unspoken tension.
Before Nathan could speak, Evelyn shattered the quiet.
"You needn't waste your time here, Mr. Black," she said calmly. "Attend to your own affairs. I'll manage perfectly well alone."
Nathan's expression darkened. "Did you not hear Leonard's words?" His voice dripped with ice.
"I'm quite capable, Mr. Black. Should Leonard inquire, I'll confirm your diligent supervision. You've no cause for concern."
Evelyn maintained her composure, but her indifference only fueled Nathan's frustration.
He studied her with an intense, probing stare, as if his gaze could peel back layers to reveal her hidden thoughts.
Then, his lips curved into a knowing smirk.
"What frightens you so, Evelyn?" he murmured.
Her eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly at the question.
She lifted her chin, meeting his gaze directly.
"Afraid? What an odd notion, Mr. Black. Why ever would I fear anything concerning you?"
Nathan chuckled lowly. "Only you can answer that. If you're truly unafraid, why this desperate attempt to rid yourself of me? What about sharing this space terrifies you so?"
Evelyn pressed her lips together, exhaling slowly through her nose.
