Chapter 420
Evelyn Hartley had reached her breaking point with Nathan Black. His complete indifference had shattered whatever lingering affection she might have held. Standing under the scalding shower spray, she let the water cascade over her face, wishing it could wash away the pain as easily as it rinsed away her tears.
The night brought no respite. Each time exhaustion dragged Evelyn into sleep, nightmares yanked her back awake. By dawn, dark circles shadowed her bloodshot eyes as she mechanically prepared for another day at the hospital.
Lila Sinclair's smirk was barely concealed when she intercepted Evelyn in the corridor. "Evelyn," she purred, feigning concern, "since you and Mr. Black are... no longer together, perhaps I could help clear your name? Who knows - maybe there's still a chance for reconciliation?" The venomous delight beneath her words was unmistakable.
Evelyn's bitter laugh echoed down the sterile hallway. "This is exactly what you've been waiting for, isn't it, dear sister?"
Lila's gasp was theatrical. "How could you think that? As family, I'm hurt you'd—"
"Save it," Evelyn cut in coldly. "Regardless of my marital status, Nathan would never look twice at you. Not now, not ever." Shouldering past her stepsister, Evelyn strode toward her office without a backward glance.
Lila's perfectly manicured nails dug into her palms. That pathetic woman had no idea what was coming. In every measurable way - pedigree, beauty, connections - she outclassed Evelyn Hartley. And soon, Nathan Black would realize it too.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows when Nathan emerged from Serena Cole's private room. He barely registered Lila's presence until she stepped into his path, her designer dress clinging to carefully curated curves.
"Mr. Black," she breathed, "might we talk?" Her lashes fluttered with practiced demureness.
Nathan's expression remained impassive. "We have nothing to discuss." He moved to step around her.
Lila's hand shot out, fingers brushing his sleeve. "It's about Evelyn." The name dripped from her lips like poison.
Nathan froze. For the first time, his glacial gaze focused on her face. Lila suppressed a triumphant smile. She had his attention now. The game was afoot.
