Chapter 403

"You were already fast asleep when I came in last night," Eleanor Sinclair replied softly. After a brief hesitation, Grace Monroe asked, "Did something happen?"

The room fell silent for a moment before Eleanor released a heavy sigh. "Evelyn and Nathan got divorced."

"What?" Isabelle Laurent gasped, her face frozen in shock.

Grace was equally stunned. "They divorced? When did this happen?"

"Yesterday," Eleanor answered calmly.

"But why?" Grace pressed, confusion evident in her voice.

"They simply weren't meant for each other," Eleanor explained simply.

Grace bit her lower lip. "Evelyn must be... devastated, isn't she?"

Eleanor nodded with another sigh. "She cried all night. But this is something she needs to face. Time will heal her wounds."

"What a tragedy. How could they just end things like this?" Isabelle said, though secretly, she couldn't deny the flicker of satisfaction she felt. The divorce worked in her favor.

"Just remember not to mention this in front of Evelyn," Eleanor cautioned.

"Understood," Isabelle replied promptly.

"Don't worry, Mom. I won't bring it up," Grace assured her.

When Evelyn Hartley arrived at the hospital, she grabbed a quick breakfast in the cafeteria before heading to the locker room to change. Just as she was about to leave, she nearly collided with Lila Sinclair.

Lila smiled brightly. "Evelyn, do you have a moment?"

Evelyn's brows furrowed slightly before she nodded in agreement.

They moved to a quiet corner for privacy.

"What do you want to talk about?" Evelyn asked directly.

Lila didn't beat around the bush.

In a composed tone, she asked, "Evelyn, doesn't it hurt to be falsely accused?"

Evelyn's eyebrows twitched, her sharp gaze piercing through Lila. What was she playing at?

Lila continued smoothly, "Funny thing—I happened to witness your argument with Serena Cole at the banquet that night."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed dangerously.

Seeing Evelyn's silence, Lila pressed on, "I saw everything... Serena tripped and fell down the stairs on her own. You didn't push her. But..." She shrugged dramatically. "What does it matter? No one believes you. Even with Leonard Grant defending you, people still think you're guilty."

Lila shook her head in mock sympathy. "Tell me, Evelyn... Would you like me to help clear your name?"

Evelyn couldn't help but laugh coldly. If Lila truly wanted to help, why wait until now? She knew Lila would revel in seeing her condemned. So why this sudden offer of assistance?

Clearly, Lila wanted something from her. That was the only reason she'd bring this up now.
