Chapter 391

Nathan remained silent.

Evelyn drew a deep breath to steady her racing heart. Her fingers trembled slightly as she spoke. "Let me make this clear—Serena threw herself down those stairs to frame me. I only reached out to catch her. Nathan, do you trust me?" Her piercing gaze searched his face for any flicker of emotion.

The air between them grew heavier with each passing second of his silence. His unreadable expression told Evelyn everything—he didn't believe her. The realization struck her like a physical blow, leaving her breathless.

Before Nathan could respond, Evelyn let out a bitter laugh. "If you've already decided I'm guilty, I won't waste my breath defending myself. What's your plan for revenge? Going to push me down the stairs too?" Her voice remained steady despite the storm inside her.

She held his gaze, unflinching, waiting for his response.

For a fleeting moment, Nathan thought he detected hurt in her words. An unfamiliar ache spread through his chest. But the memory of Evelyn smiling at Alexander's confession in the garden hardened his heart again.

Nathan found himself at a loss for words.

Even if he'd seen Evelyn push Serena, he felt no urge to demand an apology. Yet the image of her with Alexander ignited something dark within him.

Seeing his prolonged silence, Evelyn wasn't sure whether to feel relieved or devastated. A faint, sorrowful smile touched her lips before she straightened her posture. "Tomorrow at 10 AM. The courthouse. Let's finalize our divorce."

"What did you say?" Nathan's face darkened instantly. His hands clenched into fists as he stared at her, his breathing ragged. In one swift motion, he pulled Evelyn up from the sofa. "Say that again," he growled through gritted teeth.

His voice was icy enough to freeze the room.

Evelyn met his furious gaze calmly. "Remember our agreement? After Leonard's birthday, we'd end this marriage."

Nathan studied her face, trying to discern whether anger or genuine resolve drove her words.

Her steady gaze gave him the answer.

As the reality of her decision sank in, Nathan's grip on her shoulders tightened. His expression turned stormy. "Evelyn," he said slowly, "think carefully. Once we divorce, we become strangers forever."

"I've thought about nothing else. I've waited for this day too long," Evelyn replied without hesitation.

In that moment, she felt an odd sense of peace. The illusions she'd clung to finally shattered. She should have let go of Nathan—and their doomed marriage—long ago.

Veins stood out on Nathan's forehead as he struggled to control his emotions. Releasing her shoulders, a mocking smile twisted his lips. "Fine. The day has finally come. I'll be free to marry Serena soon."

The words seemed ripped from somewhere deep and painful within him.
