Chapter 389
Concern flashed across Dylan's and Serena's faces as they exchanged worried glances. Dylan hesitated for a brief moment before stepping out to check the hospital corridor. It was empty. Nathan had truly left just like that.
Returning to Serena's side, he murmured, "Nathan's gone." Serena bit her lower lip, her brow furrowed with anxiety. "Dylan, do you think... Does Nathan believe me, or is he siding with Evelyn?"
"Of course he believes you," Dylan reassured her softly. "Otherwise, he wouldn't have left the gala with you and rushed you to the hospital."
"You might be right," Serena conceded with a slight nod, her expression softening slightly. She recalled how Nathan had swept her into his arms in front of all their friends, and a flicker of joy lit up her face. She was certain of her place in Nathan's heart—she was his priority.
"But..." Dylan's voice trailed off as a thought struck him. He leaned closer to Serena, lowering his voice. "This time, you might have gone too far. How could you let yourself get hurt this badly?"
Serena's gaze hardened with determination. "Without serious injuries, how could I make Nathan feel this guilty and furious?"
"But now you're left with stitches that will scar," Dylan said resignedly.
A faint smile curled Serena's lips. "If it means Nathan divorces Evelyn and chooses me, then the scar doesn't matter. I don’t care about it at all!"
Dylan fell silent. For now, things seemed to be going their way.

At the Grant family mansion, the gala had already ended. Seated on the sofa were Leonard, Margaret, and Evelyn, with the maid who had been involved earlier standing nervously before them.
"Tell us exactly what you saw!" Leonard demanded sharply.
Too frightened to hold back, the maid spoke truthfully. "I had just finished tending to the flowers on the second-floor balcony and was about to go downstairs. But as I stepped out, I overheard Evelyn and Miss Cole arguing. I didn’t want to eavesdrop, so I went back to the balcony. When the noise stopped, I thought they’d left, so I stepped out again. And then... I saw Miss Cole falling down the stairs, and..." She hesitated, her eyes darting nervously toward Evelyn before gulping. "Evelyn’s hand was still outstretched."
Leonard’s expression darkened instantly. "Then why did you accuse Evelyn of pushing Serena? Did you actually see her do it?"
"I..." The maid faltered under the intense questioning.
"Who gave you the right to publicly accuse Evelyn when you didn’t see everything?" Leonard snapped, his face twisted in anger.
Panicked, the maid stammered, "I’m sorry! I was terrified in the moment. Seeing Evelyn’s hand extended, I... I just assumed..."
"I swear I won’t speak out of turn again!"
Leonard let out a cold laugh. "You think you’ll get another chance? Someone, settle her wages and have her removed immediately. This household doesn’t employ people like her!"
The maid’s face paled. She bowed frantically, begging for mercy. "I’m so sorry! I promise I won’t repeat this mistake. Please, give me another chance!"
She turned to Evelyn, bowing even lower. "I deeply regret my careless words about you pushing Miss Cole without knowing the full truth. It was entirely my fault! I’ll correct my mistake with every guest. Please, let me stay!"
