Chapter 255

Nathan's voice was clipped as he turned away, his jaw tight. "I'll send someone to tend to your injuries."

Without another word, he strode out, the door clicking shut behind him with finality.

Outside, Nathan braced himself against the wall, his breathing ragged. A tempest of emotions raged inside him, leaving his usual composure in tatters. His fingers curled into fists as he glanced down, his expression darkening at the undeniable evidence of his body’s betrayal.

"Goddamn it," he muttered under his breath, frustration lacing the curse.

Forcing himself to regain control, he marched toward his study and dialed Winston Graves. His tone was sharp, leaving no room for discussion. "Send a maid to Evelyn’s room immediately. She needs ointment for a fall."

The moment the call ended, Nathan exhaled slowly, his chest rising and falling with the effort to steady himself. He needed to get a grip—now.

Inside the bedroom, Evelyn winced as she pushed herself upright, her movements slow and cautious. The clothes Nathan had left for her lay neatly on the bed, and she reached for them with trembling fingers.

Her pulse still raced, the memory of his touch burning against her skin like a brand. The way his hands had lingered—gentle yet possessive—sent an involuntary shiver down her spine.

She bit her lip, heat flooding her cheeks.

The fever had left her sticky with sweat, desperate for relief. But the moment she’d stepped into the shower, dizziness had overtaken her. A slip on the slick tiles, a sharp cry—and then Nathan had been there, his presence overwhelming.

Just as she finished dressing, a soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," she called, her voice still unsteady.

The door opened, revealing a maid carrying a small tray of medical supplies. "Mrs. Black, Mr. Black asked me to assist you with your injuries."

Evelyn managed a small, grateful smile. "Thank you. I appreciate it."

"Of course, ma’am." The maid worked efficiently, her touch light as she applied the ointment to the bruises blooming along Evelyn’s skin. Once finished, she gathered her supplies and slipped out as quietly as she’d come.

Alone again, Evelyn exhaled, pressing a hand to her still-fluttering heart.

What the hell had just happened?
