Chapter 156

Dylan merely scoffed in response, his mind drifting momentarily. Serena, sensing the shift in his mood, ventured cautiously, "Perhaps we should step back from Evelyn for now."

His reaction was immediate, laced with bitterness. "You want to quit now? This is only the beginning. No, we're not backing down that easily."

Serena's voice softened with worry. "It just feels like every time we face her, we end up worse off."

Dylan's expression darkened as memories of their past encounters with Evelyn flashed through his mind.

Once, he had been the one to torment Evelyn, who had no choice but to endure in silence. Now, the roles had reversed. He let out a derisive laugh. "Don't worry. Like I said, this is just the start," he murmured, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Frustration simmered within him as he wrestled with his emotions. He despised Evelyn, but what disgusted him more was the realization that he harbored feelings for her. Shaking off the thought, he refocused on the conversation. "You'll see, Serena," he said, his voice a mix of determination and resentment. "Evelyn's time at Grand Oaks General Hospital is running out. She won't be so arrogant for much longer."

Serena frowned, perplexed. "What do you mean?"

Dylan leaned in, lowering his voice. "Uncle Dominic told me the surgery Evelyn is handling is way beyond her expertise. It's almost guaranteed she'll be dismissed soon."

Serena blinked, processing his words, her eyes flickering with unease. After a pause, she sighed. "But every time I see Evelyn, I can't shake this fear. Just the other day, when I brought food to Nathan, I ran into her, and she threatened me again."

Dylan stiffened. "Really? You never mentioned that."

Serena's gaze dropped. "What difference would it make? It already happened. Besides..." She hesitated, then continued quietly, "She wasn't entirely wrong. She and Nathan are still married, and I'm just his ex."

Dylan's voice was firm. "Don't let her words get to you. Their marriage doesn't define your place in Nathan's heart. What matters is who he truly cares about."

Serena met his eyes, her expression uncertain. "But do you really think I still matter to him?" she whispered.

"Of course. Isn't it obvious?" Dylan answered without hesitation.

Serena fell silent, her face unreadable. Sensing her turmoil, Dylan gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Don't overthink it, Serena. Trust me. I'll make sure Nathan ends things with Evelyn and marries you. Just leave it to me."

Serena nodded slowly. "Alright. I trust you."

Dylan smiled, his mind already racing with plans.

Meanwhile, Evelyn's day had been overshadowed by her earlier confrontation with Grace. She had planned to hit the Dream Club with Cassandra but canceled, lacking the energy for socializing. All she wanted now was a drink. Initially, she considered calling Natalie, but with her away on business, she dialed Alexander instead.

Alexander suggested a high-end restaurant, hoping good food might lift her spirits.
