Chapter 11
Leonard Grant's gaze darkened as it landed on Nathan. "Nathan, tell me you didn't actually go through with divorcing Evelyn?" The day after Evelyn had returned to the country, she had reached out to Leonard. But the next morning, Leonard had been stunned to learn that Nathan and Evelyn were heading to the courthouse to finalize their divorce.
At the question, Nathan's jaw tightened. His cold eyes flicked to Evelyn before he let out a humorless laugh. "Leonard."
Evelyn stepped closer to the hospital bed.
Time had not been kind to Leonard these past three years.
Now in his seventies, he looked far older than his wife, Margaret, who was barely past fifty.
Nathan, their only child together, had been born long after Leonard's two children from his first marriage.
When Leonard's eyes landed on Evelyn, they widened slightly—surprise and recognition flickering in his gaze. "Evelyn? Is that really you?"
Evelyn gave a small, silent nod.
Leonard's face brightened with relief. "Ah! So this is what you truly look like, my dear."

"What?" Leonard's breathing grew ragged, his face flushing with distress. "No! I refuse to accept this!"
Margaret reacted instantly, placing a soothing hand on his shoulder. "Leonard, calm down. It's alright—they won’t go through with it. Just breathe."
Then she shot Nathan and Evelyn a sharp look. "Both of you—out. Now."
With Leonard in such a fragile state, neither dared argue.
They obeyed silently, stepping out into the hallway.
The moment the door clicked shut behind them, Nathan whirled on Evelyn, his voice icy. "Are you playing games with me, Evelyn?"
Evelyn's brows drew together in disbelief.
She met his gaze head-on. "Nathan, do you honestly think I told Leonard about the divorce?"
Nathan's lips curled in disdain. "Who else would have?"
He remembered how she had deliberately stepped away to take that call at the courthouse—and how, mere minutes later, his mother had called him.
His voice dripped with contempt. "Given my father’s condition, we’ll have to delay the divorce. Happy now?"
Despite her resolve to stay detached, his words cut deep. The pain must have shown in her eyes, because Nathan’s expression only darkened further.
Evelyn took a steadying breath. "Mr. Black, you don’t have to be like this. Believe me, I want this divorce just as much as you do."
