Chapter 87

Ethan Sullivan had Evelyn Sullivan figured out. She never started fights but wouldn't back down from one.

Seeing Ethan's silence, Isabella Jackson's eyes instantly welled up.

"I just wanted to help serve the steamed eggs..." Her voice trembled. "I didn't mean to spill them... But Evelyn thinks I did it on purpose..."

Ethan remained quiet for a moment before speaking flatly, "Understood. You should go."

Isabella's eyes widened. Was he dismissing her just like that?

"Okay..." She bit her lip. "Don't blame Evelyn. It's all my fault..."

Before leaving, she stole a glance at Ethan. His expression was unreadable.

Ethan retrieved the first aid kit and wheeled himself back to the bedroom.

Evelyn had just rinsed her scalded arm under cold water. Spotting the kit in his hands, she arched a brow.

"Come here," he said, his voice low.

Evelyn didn't move. "I can handle it."

"You can't reach."

"Then I won't bother."

As she turned to leave, Ethan's grip tightened on his wheelchair. "Stop!"

He shoved the kit into her arms.

Evelyn walked out without looking back.

In the living room, she struggled to apply the ointment. Ethan's gaze darkened at the angry red burn on her arm.

"Why four slaps?"

Evelyn scoffed. "Does it hurt you to see it?"

"Two would've been enough."

"The other two were for the Equestrian Center." Her voice was icy. "If you're so bothered, take them for her next time."

Ethan suddenly closed the distance between them. "Then what about me? How will you settle the injustice at the Equestrian Center?"

"Slap yourself twice." She snapped the kit shut. "But that petty grievance isn't worth my effort."

His hand clamped around her wrist.

"You stayed to take care of me," he rasped. "Is it because you still love me?"

Evelyn laughed as if hearing a joke. "Don't flatter yourself. You got hurt while finalizing our divorce. I'm responsible."

More importantly, that crash had been meant for her.

Ethan searched her eyes but found only indifference.

He released her abruptly. "Good. Remember your place."
