Chapter 228
Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "Did Isabella tell you that?"
Victoria sneered. "Who said it doesn't matter. How dare you stoop so low?!"
"Mrs. Farley, we severed ties long ago." Evelyn's voice remained calm. "What I do is none of your concern."
"You—!"
Victoria trembled with rage. Even after publicly cutting ties, the Jackson family still faced gossip.
"Quit that job immediately! Or don't blame me for what happens next."
"Suit yourself."
The call ended abruptly. Victoria nearly threw her phone across the room.
Isabella quickly handed her a cup of tea. "Mom, Evelyn will understand your good intentions someday."
"I don't care!" Victoria gritted her teeth. "I'll go to the competition tomorrow myself. Let's see how long she can keep up this arrogance!"
"But wouldn't that—"
"Focus on your own competition." Victoria cut her off. "This isn't your concern."
Meanwhile, Evelyn changed clothes and left with Zoe.
At Skyview Mansion's private dining room, Lucas had been waiting.
"Miss Zade, you don't mind if I invited one more friend, do you?" His smile held a hidden meaning.
Zoe suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. "Of course not."
When Ethan walked in, Zoe's expression darkened instantly.
"What's the meaning of this, Mr. Laurier?"
Lucas feigned surprise. "Do you have a problem with my friend?"
"You know exactly what happened between Evelyn and Mr. Sullivan!"
Ethan's cold voice interrupted. "If I'm unwelcome, I'll take my leave."
Lucas stood as well. "Then consider this dinner over."
"Wait." Evelyn stopped Zoe. "It's fine. I don't mind."
Zoe looked at her worriedly. "You don't have to force yourself."
"Really, it's okay." Evelyn smiled faintly. "It makes no difference who's here."
Lucas sat back down smoothly. "Now that's what I call grace under pressure."
Zoe shot him a glare and slammed the menu onto the table. "Let's order."
