Chapter 283
Evelyn Sullivan and Ethan Sullivan's injuries weren't severe, so they were discharged quickly.
"Move into Imperial Court with me." Ethan stood at the hospital room door, his tone leaving no room for refusal.
Evelyn packed her belongings without looking up. "Fine. But I take the guest room."
His brow furrowed slightly before he relented.
The move went smoothly. Evelyn wheeled her suitcase into the guest room and locked the door behind her.
The aroma of food drifted from the living room.
"Did you order takeout?" She eyed the elaborate spread of four dishes and soup on the dining table, surprised.
Ethan was setting the table. "Eat first."
Over dinner, Evelyn picked at the steamed sea bass. "Any progress with Samuel Reynolds?"
"He insists the bombing was his idea alone." Ethan ladled soup into her bowl. "But Simon Reynolds paid off his five-million gambling debt."
She smirked. "No wonder he's so loyal."
After dinner, Ethan's phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID, he excused himself to the study.
"Mr. Sullivan, should we continue pursuing the Brocade project?" Colin Keller's voice came through the receiver.
Ethan stood by the window, the night casting shadows on his sharp profile. "Withdraw as soon as Isabella Jackson takes over."
Hanging up, he massaged his temples. He needed to fulfill those three conditions with Isabella quickly.
Meanwhile, Isabella stared at her phone screen, face darkening.
"Sullivan Group is pulling funding?" She hurled her phone onto the couch. "Evelyn, this is your doing again!"
With trembling fingers, she dialed Margaret Sullivan, voice quivering. "Aunt Margaret, there's something important you should know..."
In an upscale café's private room, Isabella stirred her latte.
"My sister wasn't lost as a child," she whispered. "My parents abandoned her on purpose."
Margaret's spoon clattered against the saucer.
"A feng shui master claimed she'd bring ruin to the Jackson family." Isabella's eyes gleamed strangely. "That master died suddenly soon after."
Margaret returned to the Sullivan estate shaking uncontrollably.
"What's wrong?" Henry Sullivan set aside his newspaper.
"Remember Master Zhang who did our feng shui readings?" Her voice trembled. "He was right—Evelyn is a jinx!"
Henry's expression darkened. "Nonsense!"
"The Jacksons knew it, that's why they discarded her!" Margaret stood abruptly. "Ever since Ethan married her, our family's been plagued with misfortune!"
Outside, lightning split the night sky.
